COLOMBO, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa officially opened an extension to the country's extension of Southern Expressway that will link the country's main ports and airports.

The ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday was attended by the president and the prime minister as well as Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Cheng Xueyuan.

"The extension of Southern Expressway up to Hambantota will connect lives, livelihoods and boost economic activity. It's the key infrastructure that links Hambantota Port and Mattala Rajapaksa Hambantota Airport and supports our vision in building Sri Lanka as a logistic hub in Asia," the president said on his official Twitter account.

Construction of the extension stretching from Godagama in the southern Matara district to Mattala in the southeastern Hambantota district began in 2015. The extension features a unique elevated pass to accommodate a safe crossing zone for elephants.

Construction was undertaken by three Chinese contractors including China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation, China State Construction Engineering Corporation and China Harbour Engineering Company. The consulting and supervision was conducted by China Railway First Survey & Design Institute Group Co., Ltd. Some of Chinese construction standards were introduced into this project that represents the advanced level of the Chinese construction and management.

Speaking to locals at a public rally near Barawakumbuka where the extension passes, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the highway would ease access to the Chinese-built Hambantota Port and further strengthen Sri Lanka's position on the maritime silk road.

Minister of ports, shipping and Highways Johnston Fernando thanked the Chinese government and the Chinese people for their assistance in building this and other development projects that have uplifted the economic status of the country.

"The biggest benefit to locals is that the value of their lands near the expressway will increase," Fernando said, adding that the expressway connects Sri Lanka's main ports in Colombo and Hambantota, while also linking airports in both districts.

Speaking to Xinhua, Minister of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development Chamal Rajapaksa said that the extension would suit his ministry's plans to develop export agriculture as the road would enable transport of produce from farms to port and airports.

The Southern Expressway was Sri Lanka's first E Class highway and is currently the longest highway in Sri Lanka.

The first stretch of the highway from Kottawa in Colombo to the southern district of Galle was completed in 2011.

The second stretch from Galle to Matara was completed in 2014.

Two-decade-long wait of Nepalis in the capital Kathmandu to get water supply from the Melamchi Water Supply Project has come close to reality after a Chinese company completed tunnel digging of the largest drinking water project in Nepal.

KATHMANDU, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Two-decade-long wait of Nepalis in the capital Kathmandu to get water supply from the Melamchi Water Supply Project has come close to reality after the Sinohydro Corporation Limited, a Chinese company, completed the tunnel digging of the project.

Water was released into the 27.5-km tunnel to test if there is any leakage or other problems in the tunnel on Sunday after the Chinese company's work, Nepal's Ministry of Water Supply said in a statement on Sunday.

Sinohydro was awarded contract in September last year, after the Nepali government terminated contract with an Italian contractor in January last year citing poor performance.

Sinohydro had won the two separate contracts of digging tunnel and the headwork of the project.

It is the largest drinking water project in Nepal in terms of the capacity as it aims to supply 170 million liters of fresh water per day to the capital. Together with available supply of water from existing sources, the Melamchi project will largely fulfill the existing water demands in Kathmandu, Nepali officials said.

"After the completion of the testing process, we will soon fix the date of the inauguration which is not far away," Nepali Minister for Water Supply Bina Magar said.

Sunday, the water was diverted to the tunnel by erecting a temporary dam on the Melamchi river which lies in the north of Kathmandu in the neighboring Sindhupalchowk district.

The project, which was launched in 2000 after years of conceptualization, has long been seen as a sustainable solution to Kathmandu's chronic shortage of drinking water.

Sinohydro has been involved in Nepal in a number of development projects as a contractor and developer of 50MW Upper Marsyangdi Hydropower Project in western Lamjung district.

Qatar unveils Foster + Partners design for World Cup centrepiece
Qatar has unveiled Foster + Partners’ design for the Lusail Stadium, the venue to the north of Doha that will host the opening and closing matches of 2022 FIFA World Cup.

According to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), the 80,000-capacity ground will be the largest in the tournament.

In 2015, the SC selected Foster + Partners, Populous and Arup to design the project, and in 2016 it announced that a joint venture between Qatari firm HBK Contracting and China Railway Construction Corporation would build it.
The Lusail Stadium’s design is inspired by Arabic craft traditions such as “fanar” lanterns and intricately detailed bowls.

The SC said after the tournament was over, the stadium would become a community space, containing schools, shops, cafes, sports facilities and clinics. To make way for the revamp the ground’s modular seating will be donated to sporting projects across the globe.

Based 15km outside Qatar’s capital Doha, the venue will be an attraction of the new Lusail City, 90% of which is completed.
Fatma Samoura, FIFA general secretary, said: “Qatar’s stadiums are among the most eye-catching ever seen and the venue proposed for the final is absolutely gorgeous.

“I particularly enjoy the fact that Middle Eastern culture is reflected in Lusail’s and several other designs, and look forward to seeing football fans from all over the world discover the culture and history of the region.”

Construction of the Lusail Stadium is due to be completed in 2020.

SURKHET, Nepal, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Celebrating the breakthrough of a national project constructed by China, Nepali leaders and officials said here Tuesday that the project has supported the country's determination to realize its national dream "Prosperous Nepal and Happy Nepali."

As the first of its kind of inter-basin water transfer project, the main part of Bheri Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project (BBDMP) has been completed almost one year earlier than its original duration. The 12.2 km tunnel on the bank of Bheri River, which is famous for its resourceful water, is located in Surkhet district of Karnali Province in western Nepal.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said at a ceremony attended by Chinese ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi and U.S. ambassador Randy Berry that "Nepal is now ready to walk and work together with the international community towards the new direction of development."

Expressing gratitude to the Chinese contractor for the successful completion of the project despite of geographical challenges, Oli shared that Nepal welcomes the use of new technology in other multipurpose projects as well.

According to the Chinese ambassador, the success of the project is a result of international cooperation, characterized by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) manufactured by America and the design and construction completed by Chinese contractor, China Overseas Engineering Group Co. Ltd.

Through a 12.2 Km long tunnel constructed by TBM technology, the first practice in one of the least developed countries, this 107 million U.S. dollar project will provide irrigation facility to 51,000 hectares of land in Banke and Bardiya districts.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barsha Man Pun termed the use of this globally advanced technology as a historical revolution for the tunnel construction.

"The project has boosted the confidence of our government to expand this technology in other multipurpose projects for the speedy completion," Pun told around 2,000 participants, requesting the development partners to provide technical and financial assistance.

The irrigation-cum-hydroelectric project is one of the strategic projects of the country that is in dire need to ease the food crisis in the region by increasing agricultural yield.

Mahnedra Bahadur Shahi, Chief Minister of Karnali Province expressed that this province enriched with many natural resources, is hopeful to resolve both the food insecurity and poverty, alarming issues with the full completion of the multipurpose project which includes a 48 MW hydro power plant that is supposed to be built in the second phase.

Speakers of the program highly praised the Chinese contractor as the project, which was inaugurated in 2015, has been able to be done one year before the deadline.

Sanjeeb Baral, project director from Nepal side, said that the early success has opened a new dimension for other development projects despite of fragile geography.

According to the project's supervision contractor based in Italy, the dedication of the Chinese contractor, besides the TBM technology, is the major reason behind the successful story.

"It is the good attitude and willingness of the Chinese company, which made the project complete early," Arun Sharma, a Nepali engineering consultant serving the Italian company, told Xinhua on the spot.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd, a petrochemical joint venture between Brunei and China, said on Wednesday that the company is planning to invest about 13.654 billion U.S. dollars in the construction of the second phase of its oil refinery and petrochemical project at Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), a 955-hectare industrial park on an island at the Brunei Bay.

Chen Liancai, Hengyi's chief executive officer, told Xinhua that the construction of the proposed second phase of PMB oil refinery and petrochemical project is expected to last for three years, and that it will add 14 million tons of crude oil processing capacity per year upon completion.

"After the completion of the second phase, our products will not only meet the domestic market demand in Brunei, but also supply the regional and international markets", Chen said, adding that the construction plan of the second phase is currently awaiting approval from the Brunei government.

Hengyi Industries is a joint venture between China's Zhejiang Hengyi Group and Damai Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary under the Brunei government's Strategic Development Capital Fund, owning 70 percent and 30 percent of the shares respectively.

Hengyi invested about 3.45 billion U.S. dollars in the first phase of its PMB oil refinery and petrochemical project, which went into full operation in November 2019 and equipped the company with 8 million tons of crude oil processing capacity per year.

Wang Xiaolin, President of the Chinese Enterprise Association in Brunei and General Manager of Bank of China Brunei Branch, told Xinhua that while oil and gas exports still play an important role in Brunei's economy, Hengyi's PMB oil refinery and petrochemical project has become an important stabilizer for the local economy in the face of a continued low oil price.

"The second phase of Hengyi's PMB project is expected to create more jobs in Brunei, boost local industries and growth and help achieve the diversification of Brunei's economy," Wang added.

The 10-km-long Padma Bridge is designed to have 41 spans, with each span being 150 meters long, and the first span was installed in September 2017.

DHAKA, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The last span of the Padma Bridge, the biggest of its kind in Bangladesh, was installed on Thursday, marking the completion of the bridge's 6.15-km main structure above the water.

Engineers and workers of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co, Ltd (MBEC) successfully put the 3,376-ton span in place, on pillars 12 and 13, in presence of Bangladeshi and Chinese officials.

The installation process concluded at around noon, Dewan Md Abdul Kader, manager of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project from the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, told reporters.

The official said the bridge's construction was not disrupted by COVID-19 with the 40th span installed on Dec. 4, noting that Bangladesh is fighting a growing second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Padma Bridge is designed to have 41 spans, with each span being 150 meters long. The first span was installed in September 2017.

The 25-m-wide and 10-km-long bridge stretches across the Padma river, one of the three major rivers in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the main works of the Padma Bridge project in December 2015.

The bridge is expected to help enhance regional trade and collaboration along the Asian highway No. 1 and the Trans-Asian railway network.
