Between 950 and 1250 was Medieval warm period, a period when the world was considerably warmer due to few volcanic activity and therefore little darkening of sky and reflection of sunlight. It was so warm that Vikings sailed to Greenland and it was green covered in grass, not icy like today. The central Asian steppes was warm and lush and full of grass and Mongol population was 6 million compared to 2 million today. So Genghis Khan was able to assembled a huge Mongol army and conquered China and Russia and parts of Europe and the Middle East.

Weather changes has been attributed to past large scale migrations and invasions before. We might see it again as we run out of water which will result in local and international conflict over rights to build dams on rivers.
