Medical Kits Manufactured by Defence R and D Units

Medical kits and equipment designed by Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE), an establishment under Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are aimed at specific requirement of Armed Forces to cover Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) warfare or related emergencies. These items have not been envisaged to have any utility to general public under normal circumstances, barring few instances like HINI kits which is assumed to be cheaper than the imported kits.

Based on Armed Forces requirement, small to medium scale pharma companies participate with DRDE in bringing out some of the medical items of the kits. Presently, the kits are aimed at Armed forces use only.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Shri AnubhavMohantyin Rajya Sabha today.

Actually a good follow up would be to show the kits medics in the armies of different countries of the world carry. I know the U.S. has general purpose Improved First Aid Kits (IFAK)

Indian Air Force very recently developed an indigenous Patient transfer unit (PTU). The PTU is basically a 'stretcher-trolley' combination where 'patient-management' can be sustained for eight hours at a stretch; tethered to various life-saving equipment during transit, thus making most of the 'golden period', the vital hour that is critical to stabilize and prepare a patient before specialist intervention, even while transit in air.

Earlier we used to import from the US - A similar off-the-shelf 'Life Support Trauma and Transfer Trolley' (LSTATT) would cost nearly $180,000 in the US way back in 2007. The cost of the IAF PTU is about $30,000. This can turn into a boon for a country like India where cost is a major factor. It has saved nearly 180 lives so far. Right now being used in Nepal as well.
