Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan speaks to media in AJK's Mirpur city. — DawnNewsTV
Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari on Wednesday apologised for "insensitive" and "inappropriate" remarks made by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan regarding the devastating earthquake that jolted parts of the country a day earlier.

"Since government means collective responsibility, I apologise for the shock and hurt felt by the SAPM's insensitive and inappropriate remarks on the earthquake and her jocular tone on an issue of human suffering," Mazari said in a tweet.

The Information SAPM's remarks on the earthquake were insensitive, absolutely inappropriate and most certainly had nothing to do with govt viewpoint. Human suffering can never be made light of.

Awan, who had been addressing a ceremony in Islamabad yesterday right when the earthquake struck, had made light of the situation after the tremors subsided.

"It's a sign of change that even the earth has shifted. Even [the earth] does not want to accept this change, [which has come] so rapidly," she could be heard saying in a widely shared video.

It later emerged that the powerful, 5.6 magnitude quake had not only caused damage to infrastructure, but had killed at least 23 and injured more than 300, many of whom are in a critical state.

Mazari, in a series of tweets today, apologised for Awan's remarks, saying: "The Information SAPM's remarks on the earthquake were insensitive, absolutely inappropriate and most certainly had nothing to do with government viewpoint. Human suffering can never be made light of."

Awan also addressed the outrage her statements had caused, saying in a tweet: "We had been talking about the effects of social media. The earthquake struck suddenly and the attendees were worried. I made those remarks in light of [our conversation] in order to lift the spirits of the [scared] audience."

In a video statement released on Twitter, the SAPM said: "A fabricated, baseless and negative report about me is circulating on social media and electronic media which is being labelled as [my] comment on the earthquake.

"I condemn this act and [...] appeal not to twist facts. This is a serious matter and [considering] the current situation of the earthquake [destruction], do not turn [my remarks] into a source of amusement."

Awan is currently in Azad Jammu and Kashmir's Mirpur city, which has suffered the most damage from yesterday's quake, to brief the media over the destruction caused and relief efforts underway.

Awan also addressed the outrage her statements had caused, saying in a tweet: "We had been talking about the effects of social media. The earthquake struck suddenly and the attendees were worried. I made those remarks in light of [our conversation] in order to lift the spirits of the [scared] audience."

Anyone have a link for the whole video? So we can see for ourselves if she is telling the truth.

Cant find the question asked for which she answered...Media is quick ONLY to highlight her answer! Pakistani media is ALSO a loose cannon!

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has come under fire after she said the earthquake in Northern Pakistan was a sign of tabdeeli [change].

Addressing a digital media workshop, Awan said, “This restiveness is a sign of change that the earth has also taken a turn. Maybe this early change is also not acceptable to it,” she said with a smile on her face.

Awan was heavily criticised for her remarks, which came after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook several parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the Khyber Pakhtunkhawa provinces.

Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari tweeted an apology on the government’s behalf. “The Information SAPM's remarks on the earthquake were insensitive, absolutely inappropriate and most certainly had nothing to do with govt viewpoint. Human suffering can never be made light of.”

She added, “Since govt means collective responsibility I apologize for the shock and hurt felt by the SAPM's insensitive and inappropriate remarks on the earthquake and her jocular tone on an issue of human suffering.”

Firdous Ashiq Awan's statement on earthquake being caused by Tabdeeli is insensitive and plain "stupid". The Tabdeeli should have been providing aid and assistance and not making a mockery of victims of the earthquake in which people lost lives.
This is sadly the real tabdeeli!

Firdous Ashiq Awan casually jokes about the #earthquake, without realizing that it could bring a devastating tragedy. This is beyond deplorable. The special adviser continues to act as a loose cannon. Shameful and insensitive.

Later Awan took to Twitter and in video post said her remarks had been blown out of context.

She said it was irresponsible of social media to negatively portray her remarks, adding she had made the comments on how social media is changing the country and not on the earthquake.

The sad thing is the same liberals who get jaw locked at other crimes (far worse) to the nation are quick to take a quick bash?

Her statement was before the actual earthquake and it was taken out of context. Miss Awan should have released explanations immediately after her initial statement was released to the media.

Our media is famous for highlighting unnecessary things for rating. We know there are issues in the country but if you analyze them, 30% is PTI performance issues, 30% is opposition statements who only want to hide their corruption, and 40% is media’s blackmailing and creating fake news.

That’s way we need a media watch dog to monitor our media.

this is nonsense with all due respect. she had no idea what to say and made some ridiculous joke like statement and exposed her idiocy and verbal diarrhea. period. she wasn't taken out of context. if she was Shireen Mazari would not be apologizing for this joke of a person.

imran khan's biggest weakness and likely his downfall will be the buffoons, lotas and morons he has allowed into the party.
