Mumbai: Confusion between `mediate' and 'meditate' might have led US President Donald Trump to believe that India wanted him to intervene in the Kashmir issue, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid quipped on Thursday.

India has denied Trump's claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested him to mediate between India and Pakistan for resolving the Kashmir issue. Khurshid was speaking at the launch of his book "Visible Muslim, Invisible Citizen: Understanding Islam in Indian Democracy" here.

Referring to the controversy, the former external affairs minister said in a lighter vein, "May be prime minister Modi wanted to say why don't you meditate for Yoga, and he thought Modi was asking to mediate.

"It was a problem of communication. But diplomacy is all about communication and if you are not able to communicate properly, what kind of diplomacy you are having," he added.

The Congress leader praised external affairs minister S Jaishankar, citing his track record as a diplomat. "He has a very outstanding record and we have such a bright foreign minister, who has left remarkable legacy behind him (as foreign secretary). But I can say only sorry for him," Khurshid added.

During an interaction which followed the book release, Khurshid fielded questions about what it means to be Muslim in contemporary India.

"Muslims are gradually disappearing from the public discourse and we need to have a deep understanding why it is happening," he said. However, floating a party specially for Muslims won't help, he said.

"They can take shelter in liberal parties, but liberal parties also need to prove that they are actually liberal," the Congress leader added. Religious and political leaders should join hands to offer a modern interpretation of Islam, as done by poet Allama Iqbal in the past, Khurshid said.

Islam is a very flexible religion and its flexibility allows its followers to do anything if their intentions are pure, Khurshid opined.

He also stated that there are a lot of non-Muslims "who have always stood behind Muslims and have supported them", and majority of Hindus and Muslims believe in the Constitution.

An "old hand" of foreign ministry trying to control damage.

It's interesting to see the change in Pakistanis' views of Trump after Imran Khan's visit. Are you guys really this fickle that a simple meeting of statesmen is all it takes to win you over?

I mean Trump says a lot of things. The idea of him acting as a mediator is laughable at best. The amount of understanding he has of the Kashmir conflict or of either of our cultures is next to nothing.

GoI has already released a statement denying this absurd claim by Donald and that's all they need do.

Have some self-respect, please.

Modi is Pak’s man!!! What India had been spinning for 3 decades via deceptions, treachery, terrorism, implanting traitors, lobbying etc. to finally isolate and marginalize Pak - thanks to the major world powers too - went down the drain in 3 days as the PAF was doing the routine job!! Thank you Modi.....

We Pakistanis are just enjoying the tamasha.

GOI is a known liar.
They lied about Balakot and f16 and surgical strike.

Trump is also a known liar

now the question is, who is the bigger liar?

It's just fun watching two Hindu gods fight each other :)

BS... when did anyone say "meditate between us"... it does not make sense syntactically. But "mediate between us" is grammatically correct.

This is politics , get out of your fantasies.

If you had self respect , you wont have dared to comment here after your whole state machinery barked about state-isolation. Per kiya karain na ghairat hay na sharam. These two things are very unique to indian mind set. Pitty!

Even if 'meditate' was used why did Modi reply with 'Kashmir' when asked where. Did Modi want Trump to meditate in Kashmir? And since we have had Trump's aide state "the President does not lie' suggesting that White House is holding it's ground as to what was said.
Imagine Trump meditating, sitting in Kashmir exactly at the line of control... that's what modi meant when he said: Trump please meditate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.

Trump a indian God is lying or Modi? it is clearly indicating to world that India is not serious about peace and stability in the region.India is digging it's own grave now.

India is as usual being stupid. US mediation will help them more then anything. We all know world powers want status quo on LoC which is exactly what India want as well despite what their RSS chadies claim.

Now its possible that Pakistan may want to end this conflict and declare LoC as border with 3rd party intervention but I'm not sure about Kashmiris in Iok? I mean if they wanted to live under hindutva raj who will lynch them over food habits then this conflict could have been over decade ago in Musharraf-Vajpai era.

Stop being the White man's slave. :pakistan::lol:
You better be careful. If RSS finds out that you are insulting their god, they might lynch you.
