If you're into comic books or graphic novels, you would know it's not a new phenomenon at all .Spider-Man India by Marvel Comics is all Indian.Pavitra Prabhakar(Peter Parker) is depicted as a Mumbai kid battling an assortment of devils who bear a close resemblance to the original villains of Spider-Man.

Comics have gone international. A Whitey-white Superman who stands for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" won't fly well in the ME or Asia.

Here's an old Superman, probably from the 40's or 50's... Note the American Eagle and the tanks and artillery in the background.

Mixed-race heroes appeal internationally, and they also have their genesis in "white guilt." If all the superheroes are white, people are thinking, if not saying, "Hey, the League of Superheroes be a bunch o' racists."

Captain America - can it get any more jingoistic? Britain responded with ta da! Captain Britain.

All comics look to make money, and will create characters that appeal to their local fan base.

Personally, never liked Toby Maguire as Spiderman. He's better suited to roles like the one he played in 'Brothers' and 'Cedar House Rules'.
