Hyderabad: The outlawed left wing organisation Communist Party of India-Maoist, reeling from the loss of 34 of its members in the recent encounter in Malkangiri district of Odisha, has alleged that it was a covert operation. The dreaded armed organisation has called for a shutdown in five states across the country in protest against the incident.

Central committee member and central spokesperson of the organisation, Pratap, called for the strike in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

Jagan, official spokesperson of the Maoist organisation in Telangana, has alleged the police used their covert agents within the organisation to kill the Maoists.

He confirmed that those killed include two top leaders of Aandhra Ppradesh and Odisha Special Zone committee members Chamalla Kishtaiah alias Daya Szc member and Venkatramanna alias Ganesh.

Kailash, East Division committee secretary of the Maoist organisation, held the chief ministers of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, Naveen Patnaik and Chandrababu Naidu, responsible for the killings and threatened them with dire consequences.

Maoists, blamed for many political killings in the past, have also issued a letter threatening to target Naidu and his family members.

Naidu narrowly escaped an attempt on his life by Maoists in Tirumala in October 2003.

The Maoists have given a call for Telangana Bandh or shut down on November 3. It is after a long gap of many years that the Maoists have tried to make their presence felt in Telangana by calling a strike in protest against the killings of its members.

Police had said that 34 Maoists were killed in a joint operation by the commando forces in Chitrakonda forest near Balimela reservoir on Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border on October 24. The commando forces of the two states had participated in the operation.

But Maoists and their supporters, including prominent radical poet Vara Vara Rao and civil liberties activists, have alleged it was a fake encounter.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy has also condemned the killings in the name of encounters. “The CPI demands a judicial inquiry into the whole incident,” he said in a statement. He also condemned Maoists threat to Naidu and his family.

Meanwhile, in a related development Srisha, wife of central committee member Ramakrishna alias Akkiraju Haragopal, Monday moved a writ petition before Hyderabad High court seeking direction to the police to produce her husband in the court.

She alleged that her husband was arrested by the police during the encounter in Malkangiri and his life was under grave threat.

It was widely believed that Ramakrishna was present where the encounter took place. While police said that he managed to escape with the help of security guards his supporters suspect that he might have been arrested.
