Manipur to get German-made weapons

IMPHAL: After hovercraft, the state force will be equipped with the MP5A3 series sub-machine guns to fight insurgency.

The German-made sophisticated guns are being used by a special US Air Force military organisation Star Gate Command for urban warfare.

The ministry of home affairs would procure the weapons for the state police commandos as part of police modernization programme, sources said.

The ministry would be procuring 775 MP5A3 series guns this year, the source said adding that the state home department has also sent relevant documents to the ministry in connection with the matter.

Besides, the ministry would also provide 3500 AK series and 3000 Indian Small Arms System (Insas) rifles for the state police, the source added.

The move comes at a time when the Loktak Protection Force (LPF) set up by the state has been equipped with three US-made hovercraft to flush out militants from Loktak, the biggest fresh water lake in the northeast.

Security officials said rebels belonging to various organisations had put up at huts built on floating phumdis (thick bio-mass), deep inside the adjoining areas to the lake like the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is home to the rare brow antlered deer, locally known as Sangai.

Three high-tech hovercraft landed in the Bishnupur district on Wednesday and are being kept at Toubul village on the banks of the lake.

Is MP5 enough to fight insurgency? they only fire 9mm bullets which have less range and is not Armour piercing.. I would prefer MP7 or P90

hell, we dont need armour piercing guns and bullets. even AK-47 will do the job. wat is needed is political will which is sorely lacking in indian governments. there is also need to beef up intelligence apparatus in the area.

so you say 9mm is a weak round and cant do anything

excellent decision! it will help police to fight against insurgency and mafias.

I think just yesterday Germany and austrai had said they will not sale arms to our police because of the sates human rights record.

YES you are right , they put the deal on hold as the states like AP, ORRISA ,AND others have low human rights record .

The 9mm can't pierce bullet proof armor you know.. so it is a weak round in comparison. But for a state police force it is more than enough. You don't need them carrying 7.62s..

it was a rhetoric question ,yes 9mm is good enough for them and 5.56 too
though with these kinds of guns you need constant practice and before that the proper training, proper maintenance as you cant use and abuse the mp5,m4.

9mm has less range, MP5 is good for close battles, what if in North East forest, the enemy fires at you from 300 meters away and killing you and your 9mm not reaching them???

1) forces have training that is enough to make them understand what to use where ,for CQB they'll use mp5 but in jungles they'll surely take 5.56 or 7.62 caliber weapons.

2)bulletproof vest doesnt mean its invincible ,either get a bullet big enough or hit from a shorter range.most confrontations in CQB/hostage rescue happen at 15-20m and since you mentioned jungle except for a well trained sniper who has great postion with an assault rifle in the night you cant take a well aimed shot beyond 50-60m its nature buddy you just cant bend it.

in close combat, against terrorists/insurgents wat is needed is a rifle which is light, has burst fire capability, is easy to maintain and is reliable. most of encounters occur in close quarters and even 5.56 mm is good enough to do the job. i think 9mm is a waste in insugency operations.
