Man held over gun scare at Cannes festival

A man has been arrested after shots were fired at the Cannes Film Festival, sparking panic on a dramatic day that also featured a jewellery heist.

Chaos erupted briefly on Cannes' main thoroughfare on Friday (early Saturday AEST) when the suspected assailant allegedly fired two blank shots near the filming of a live television program.

Police said the man, who was quickly detained, also had a fake grenade.

The incident occurred as festival jury members Christophe Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were being interviewed on French TV show Le Grand Journal.

They were rushed off stage.

Popular British actress Emma Watson was also interviewed shortly before the incident.
An eyewitness told AAP she heard several shots fired and said the panic spread quickly as many people ran to flee the scene.

Another Hollywood star, actress Liv Tyler, was delayed getting to a nearby promotional visit due to the incident.

Marcel Authier, in charge of public security in the local Alpes-Maritimes department, said a 42-year-old man was detained.

"It's someone mentally unstable who was immediately arrested," Authier said.

Le Grand Journal presenter Michel Denisot said the man told a woman next to him "If I were you, I wouldn't stick around here."

Earlier on Friday, jewellery worth $A1.3 million - apparently due to be loaned to stars at the festival - was stolen from a local hotel in a pre-dawn robbery.
The coveted Palme d'Or trophy was safe, officials said.

The robbery took place in the hotel room of an American employee of Swiss jeweller Chopard as she was out for the evening, police said.

A strongbox containing jewels was ripped out of the wardrobe and carried off, they said.

The public prosecutor for the Cannes region, Jean-Michel Cailliau, said the loss was estimated at one million euros ($A1.3 million).

Chopard said the value of the lost items was far lower.

It also denied the jewels were to be worn by actresses at the festival.

The heist occurred before 5am local time at the Novotel hotel, located about 15 minutes from the festival venue, police said.

In a twist, the robbery took place shortly after the world premiere of The Bling Ring, a true-to-life tale of a group of wealthy teenagers who burgle the homes of Hollywood celebrities.

The Cannes Film Festival is ranked as the world's most prestigious movie showcase.
