Kerala Government's Plans for Dry State Approved by High Court
Kerala Government's Plans for Dry State Approved by High Court
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's no-liquor policy was approved today by the High Court, which has said that it is in line with the Indian Constitution.
The court said alcohol should be served only in five star hotels, and others can take wine and beer licences.
The new policy says liquor will be served in heritage or luxury hotels but not bars. Hundreds of bars across the state, which were asked to shut down, had challenged the order.
The liquor policy aims at complete prohibition in the state in a phased manner.
Supporting the decision, the court cited Article 47 of the Constitution, which says "the state shall endeavour to bring about prohibition... except for medicinal purposes of intoxicating drinks and of drugs which are injurious to health."
