Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok looks at exhibits at the opening of the Malaysia-Vietnam Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, today.

HO CHI MINH: Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok is optimistic that palm oil exports to Vietnam will expand as the country experiences rapid economic growth and improved living standards.

At a press conference after the launch of the Malaysia-Vietnam Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar (POTS) here today, Kok said Vietnam was an important market for Malaysian palm oil and that its importance would only continue to grow.

In 2018, she said, Vietnam consumed 1.5 million tonnes of oils and fats but it only produced 550,000 tonnes locally.

“They still need a lot more to cater to the needs of the local community. So, according to our estimates, Vietnam needs to import over 900,000 tonnes of oil to cater to consumption demands.”

Kok said palm oil was the main oil imported by Vietnam, making up 89% of all imported oils and fats, and this was why it would continue to be an important market for Malaysia.

According to Malaysian Palm Oil Council chairman Lee Yeow Chor, who was also present, Vietnam imported 462,000 tonnes of palm oil and palm oil products from Malaysia last year.

“Between January and July this year, Vietnam imported some 325,000 tonnes of palm oil and palm oil products from Malaysia, which is 22% higher than the corresponding period in 2018,” Lee said.

By the end of the year, he estimated that the final export tally would be close to 500,000 tonnes.

“We expect this to grow because of Vietnam’s high gross domestic product (GDP) growth of between 7% and 8%,” he said.

Vietnam ranks 8th on the list of the top 10 importers of Malaysian palm oil. The commodity is extensively used in a host of goods including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food items and personal care products.

In her opening address at the trade fair and seminar today, Kok hailed the strong trade relations between Malaysia and Vietnam, noting that the country was the also the 8th largest destination for Malaysian exports, which totalled RM34.21 billion last year.

“Malaysian and Vietnamese players in the industry should embark on a number of collaborative initiatives to further enhance trade relationships in this precious commodity.

“Above all, there is a need for all oils and fats stakeholders to work together to meet the increasing demands of the Vietnamese consumers,” she said.

Kok said that the opportunities were “limitless” for the private sectors in Vietnam and Malaysia to expand the edible oil and palm oil business, and she thanked Vietnam for its continued support for the palm oil industry.

Our palm oil plantation expansion has been stopped. We have sold to much palm oil. Let Malaysian supply palm oil to Vietnam.

It stops? Are you sure?
The sky over Singapore, Malaysia cities are regularly darkened by Indonesia‘s scorched earth policy. I hope that in one day will stop eventually. Hopefully not when the last tree is burnt.

Jokowi imposes moratorium on palm oil plantations

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed ministers and regional administrations to halt the issuance of new permits for palm oil plantations.

The President also ordered a review of the existing permits amid deforestation concerns, said Prabianto Mukti Wibowo, an official from the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister, on Thursday.

“From ministries to regents, [they all] have been ordered to review the forest permits for [palm oil] plantations.”

Prabianto said the moratorium had been imposed to reduce conflict, especially on plantations owned by smallholders and corporations inside natural forests.

the current smog is caused by peatland burned by dry seasons, not corp burned their land area before planting new crops

I talk to a lot of old people. During early days before the 1980s, there is no such thing as haze. The current smog is definitely related to human activity and not a natural occurrence. Sure dry season existed, but they never catch fire on this scale and frequency.

Since 1998 El Nino, earth is much dryer and warmer compared before, i would not deny there is still land burning in area in Sumatra and Borneo, but not at scale like in 2008-2016

Defiant Indonesia rejects Malaysia's haze complaints, despite evidence.

JAKARTA: Indonesia on Friday rejected Malaysian complaints about hazardous smoke drifting from its forest fires across the border, saying blazes were also raging in parts of Malaysia and on Malaysian-owned plantations in Indonesia.
In an escalating row over the smoke haze, a Malaysian minister said on Thursday that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad would write to Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo to raise concerns about cross-border haze.
Malaysia closed hundreds of schools and sent half a million face masks to Sarawak this week, after the smoke built up to unhealthy levels.
Air quality in Indonesian towns closest to the fires have risen to hazardous levels and on Wednesday thousands held mass Islamic prayer for rain.
Forest fires have become an almost annual occurence in Indonesia, especially in dry years, and Indonesia’s neighbours have complained of the thick, choking haze wafting in, raising concern about health and the impact on tourism.
Indonesia’s Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar on Friday said she felt Malaysia had not painted an objective picture of the flames, which have ripped through parts of Indonesia’s Sumatra and Borneo islands for more than a month.
Siti Nurbaya said while smog from fires in Indonesia may have crossed over to Malaysia, fires detected last week in the Malaysian state of Sarawak in Borneo and peninsular Malaysia also contributed to worsening air quality there.
“I only asked that they (Malaysians) be objective and sequential in their data analysis,” she told Reuters on Friday, responding to Kuala Lumpur’s remarks that it was using recent data from ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre.
Malaysia’s Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin in a post on her Facebook page on Thursday evening said Indonesia “should not be in denial” and data should speak for itself.

Yeo said the ASEAN data put the number of hotspots in the Indonesian provinces on Borneo and on Sumatra island at 474 and 387, respectively, versus 7 in Malaysia. She also claimed that wind direction meant the haze could not be from Sarawak.
Siti Nurbaya said she was not seeking to look for excuses but did not “have time for polemics” and would rather work on putting out fires that she said covered a “huge” area.
Jakarta had deployed 46 helicopters for water bombing and cloud seeding, Siti Nurbaya said.
Indonesia has sent thousands of security personnel to try to douse the flames. The government has also sealed off plantations operated by at least 30 companies, where fires had been spotted, and brought criminal charges against four.
At least four palm oil companies whose land had been sealed off were subsidiaries of Malaysian groups, Siti Nurbaya said.
She named them as West Kalimantan-based Sime Indo Agro - a unit of Sime Darby Plantation, Sukses Karya Sawit - a unit of IOI Corporation, Rafi Kamajaya Abadi - a unit of TDM Berhad and Riau-based Adei Plantation and Industry - a unit of Kuala Lumpur Kepong Group.
A spokeswoman for Sime Darby’s Indonesian operation Minamas Plantation said the company was not aware its plantation had been sealed off and was monitoring for hotspots. Sime Darby and IOI both said they were checking their Indonesian operations.
Sukses Karya Sawit, Rafi Kamajaya Abadi and Adei Plantation and Industry could not immediately be contacted. The parent companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment. - REUTERS
