How Bollywood's Padmaavat distorted a Sufi love poem

by Rakhshanda Jalil
The 14th century period drama focuses on the tale of Muslim King Alauddin Khilji, Rajput ruler Ratan Singh, and Hindu queen Padmavati.

Hindu groups in India alleged the film distorts history by depicting Rajput queen Padmini - the protagonist of the film - in a poor light.

Protesters in the South Asian country took to the streets to demand the movie was not screened there, but eventually lost their bid after the Supreme Court rejected a bid to ban the film.

In an unexpected twist, Malaysia's Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday said the film would not be screened in nationwide cinemas, rejecting the way in which Alauddin Khilji was depicted.

"He is portrayed as a sultan who is arrogant, cruel, inhumane, devious with all kinds of trickery, unreliable and who does not fully practise Islamic teachings," the ministry said in a statement, according to The Straits Times.

Malaysia's Film Censorship Board ruled that the movie was "not approved for screening".

A trailer for Padmaavat shows the Muslim sultan as a man with an aggressive expression, his face dirtied by blood and mud.

Bollywood films are popular in Malaysia. Ethnic Indians comprise 7 percent of Malaysia, a majority Muslim country of 32 million people.

The censorship board has previously banned films with religious themes, such as the 2014 biblical drama Noah, and movies with sexual content, such as Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015.

Started by pissing off Hindus, ended up pissing off Muslims......I bet the Christians are feeling left out now...

Pakistan.......?

More like a negative portrayal of Rajput, who rather burned their wives, instead of allowing them to remarry.
The movie shows that the women ran into an inferno of fire in their own will.

In western romance movie such as Titanic, the male protagonist will ask the Prima dona to live on.

I believe it was just the rajput hindus of india who were pissed off over a fictional character.
While some muslims are pissed off on how General Aladdin was portrayed.

The Rajput were too wicked. Muslim invasion of India is good. At least wife of Muslim no need to go satee (or they did???). :(

Was the women from Mughal "liberation zone" all defied and untouchable?

I am a Deist which means I don't get much into religious conflicts but inaccuracies of history does piss me off.
In reality the current rajputs of india wanted to cut off deepika's nose even though she is just the actress not the producer or director. It shows how wicked they are in real life but in the movie they are shown as innocent while aladdin was a war monger.

I don't know if he's islamophobic but I can say that he's "sentiment driven"... no objectivity in his statement
As for the woman treatment, one thing I'm sure... no one in both side were angels for that matter, but Blaming the evilness of one side without at least seeing their wrongdoing is childish... and mostly stupid.

If he answered by saying Muslims did bad and so do we... and then devloping his opinion.. I wouldn't care and mostly supported him... But this one sideing of YOu"Evil" and Me "Angel" is not my cup of tea.
