Make Karachi arms-free: Musharraf

* President warns against ‘ethnic conspiracy’
* Says govt avoiding action against Lal Masjid to avoid loss of lives

KARACHI: President General Pervez Musharraf on Friday directed the Sindh government to chalk out a comprehensive strategy and campaign to make Karachi weapons-free.

Addressing a high-level meeting at Chief Minister’s house here, Musharraf directed the Sindh government to maintain religious harmony and improve security in the provincial capital by seizing weapons from the people at the earliest.

He said that previous campaigns had failed because only ordinary citizens handed over their weapons to the government, while anti-social individuals eluded the authorities. He added that a successful weapons-recovery campaign was necessary to contain lawlessness in the city. Musharraf said the recent violence in Karachi over the suspension of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was the result of a conspiracy to fuel ethnic tension. He said that some individuals were trying to give ethnic colour to the Karachi carnage to create more chaos in the city.

The president said rumours that the forthcoming general elections would be postponed were baseless, adding that the elections would be held according to the schedule and presidential election would be held according to the Constitution.

Musharraf also directed Federal Water and Power Minister Liaqat Jatoi to take immediate steps to overcome the electricity crisis in Karachi.

Addressing a cross-section of people at Chief Minister’s House after the meeting, Musharraf repeated the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism and extremism from the country. He said that extremism existed in the country in the form of some groups who were trying to impose their beliefs on others. “This is a challenge which has to be faced,” he added.

On the Lal Masjid issue, Musharraf said it was not difficult for the government to take action against the madrassa students but this would result in loss of lives. He said that his only advice to the Lal Masjid administration was that they should follow the right path and avoid harming Pakistan.

Musharraf also called for harmony in Karachi in the aftermath of the May 12 violence. “Everyone should make sure that such things do not recur in future and peace and harmony is maintained here,” Musharraf said. “Now it is the responsibility of everyone living here to sustain the restored normalcy and maintain peace,” he was quoted as saying by APP. Musharraf said that he had no personal differences with CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and hoped that the opposition would avoid politicising a judicial issue.

Musharraf 'seeks Karachi peace'

Police are accused of doing little to stop the violence.

President Pervez Musharraf is visiting the city of Karachi two weeks after some of Pakistan's worst political violence in years claimed 41 lives.
He praised the government in Sindh province which he said peacefully resolving tensions in the city.

Most of those killed in gun battles with followers of Sindh's pro-Musharraf ruling party were opposition activists.

Police were accused of standing by on the orders of the local authorities, who told them not to carry arms.

I commend the Sindh government for resolving the matter peacefully

President Musharraf

Opposition parties had been planning a mass rally in Karachi on 12 May in support of suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry when violence broke out.

The judge was suspended by Gen Musharraf in March and denies claims he abused his office. The president is accused of trying to stifle the independence of the judiciary in an election year, and protests over the judge have snowballed into a campaign against the government.

Strike off

President Musharraf's trip to Pakistan's largest city came after a potentially violent protest strike scheduled for Friday was called off.

He told a meeting at the Sindh chief minister's official residence: "I commend the Sindh government for resolving the matter peacefully."

The president welcomed efforts by some mostly Pashtun opposition political parties to lower tensions in the city, but accused other opposition parties of "promoting ethnic violence for political ends".

The BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad says that will be taken as a reference to the Pakistan People's Party of Benazir Bhutto and the six-party Islamic alliance, the MMA. President Musharraf also promised "peace committees" would be set up to look into ethnic problems in Karachi.

Our correspondent says the violence of 12 May reawakened ethnic tensions in the commercial capital and was seen as a further weakening of the current government's grip on power.

It also led the PPP, thought to be the country's largest party, to pull out of talks that could have seen them form the next government.

The cancellation of Friday's strike was greeted with relief in Karachi and by the government. But our correspondent says some observers believe the events of 12 May could influence the president's political future.

This is definately needs to be done, but then again would it lead the government to abuse its citizens in the future? Like during B Bhutto.

Could you be more specific Webby?

Karachiites are fed up with violance, I know any such move by the government would be much appreciated by the mass and fully supported.

Benazir had every member of MQM beaten up by the police and locked up. They searched every house. Later released them. During that period guns were used to deter against the police and escape.

Take it as something that was done by the British in the United States during the colonization period, and with that 2nd Amendment given them the right to bear arms in order to oppose to Federal Government if needed. Government is suppose to be for the people. People who want freedom, equality and justice.

This line is propoganda. The reason why doesn't attack is because most of children of the Generals or army attend there to learn religious activities and therefore they would oppose any action against it.

That was a fight. Pakistan security killed more than what they could ever kill.

I remember walking in the area of the MQM, where they hide and i was just going to a shop or something and i saw fully armoured vechiles in numbers like 8 of them called Baktar-Bans all moving in the "galian" a few inches away from me. I was like fu.ck!.. i hope no one fires a shot or i would be done right there with the machine guns on the top of them. :woot:

Those vehicle were similar to Scorpion LRV but a little bigger with more roam and periscopes.

Now this is strange.

It was Mush unders whose supervision this snake and his party gathered strength again. All the efforts of Naseer Ullah Babar to wipe out MQM were seriously damaged when Mush allowed MQM to arm itself again. And now he is telling them he wants arms free karachi.

You live in Karachi.

I think he opposes free arms since the day one. If you remember he commented that there is no armed group in Karachi, he was reffering to MQM and the other party who was tit for tat for the MQM. I forgot. What was it? (Mahajir Qaumi Movement)? :what:

Contrary to what u are saying not a single word of condemnation has come from Mush criticizing MQM for the events of 12th May. He has also set aside any demand of judicial inquiry. Rather he has appreciated MQM and Sindh government

Pervez: No probe into Karachi killings

Hours after President Musharraf ruled out a probe into the May 12 Karachi killings, Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court today took a suo motu notice and constituted a larger Bench of seven judges to look into the circumstances that led to the bloodbath.
