'Make in India': Korean major Hyundai to build warships in India

.
:D People still falling for it i see

Which partially is based on the very good marketing campaing of the BJP since the elections (the Congress can learn a lot in this field), but also because people doesn't really care! The general perception is negative for the UPA years, therefore people don't bother to look at what actually was done or achieved and where the base of some of the current success lies.

September 7, 2010 - Fruits of Antony’s visit to South Korea: Defence Ties Strengthen further

As a part of India’s ‘Look East policy’, the Defence Minister, A.K. Antony, undertook a two-day visit to South Korea on 2-3 September 2010. Antony was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, Vice Admiral R.K. Dhowan, Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik, DRDO Chief Controller C.K. Prahlada, and Defence Advisor Sundaram Krishna. This was the first visit of an Indian defence minister to South Korea and was at the invitation of his counterpart, Kim Tae-young. This visit was a follow-up on the declaration issued by the two countries during the state visit of the South Korean President to India in January 2010, when they agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a “strategic partnership”.1 The visit of the South Korean president paved the way for expanding bilateral military ties which had till then remained restricted to low-key naval exercises...

...Apart from seeking defence cooperation, India is keen to tap South Korea’s strong capabilities in ship building technology. Indeed South Korea has marched ahead of Japan in naval ship-building technology and therefore both are seeking synergies in this potential area of cooperation for mutual benefit...

...Indeed, the foundation of defence cooperation between the two countries was laid in 2005 when they signed a MoU on cooperation in Defence, Industry and Logistics. Another MoU on cooperation between their Coast Guards was signed in March 2006.5 To take the relationship further, it was expected that a range of issues, including defence cooperation for peace and stability in Asia-Pacific, and bilateral cooperation in Research and Development for manufacture of military equipment figured during discussions between Antony and South Korea’s top leadership. Indeed, many South Korean companies are vying for Indian armed forces’ equipment acquisition programmes such as the basic trainer aircraft and naval warship construction contracts.

In view of the above, the two MoUs that were signed during Antony’s visit are path-breaking. The first MoU “envisaged exchange of defence related experience and information, mutual exchange of visits by military personnel and experts including civilian staff associated with defence services, military education and training and conduct of military exercises, exchange of visits of ships and aircraft, as jointly decided between the two countries.”7 The MoU further “envisaged cooperation in humanitarian assistance and international peace keeping activities.”8 The MoU will remain valid for a period of five years with provision for its extension for five more years...

So once again, we see an ongoing foreign policy of the GoI that goes beyond party politics, but is nothing completelly new as many people think. Be it the defence contracts that were re-issued with the US during the visit of the PM last year, or this once with S. Korea, not to mention the close relations to Japan, all this has a foundation that was laid under the UPA too. The opening article however shows what the actual positive changes of the current government are and that added to the relations we already had:

Addressing the CEOs in Seoul, Modi outlined the steps taken by his government, which include fast-tracking of approvals in industry and infrastructure, and liberalisation of FDI. “I invite you to India to see the change. We are also prepared to work with you in making conditions more conducive for you,” Modi said in his address to the first meeting of the newly set-up India-South Korea CEOs Forum.

- reduction of bureaucracy
- increased FDI
- intention to improve infrastructure
- reduction of tax issues

All of this helps foreign companies to come to India and start own facilities or form JV's and these are the actual new things, while the policies to make India a production hub or to increase JV's with Indian industry partners were created earlier.

Put both together under a common marketing name and you have "Make in India"!

GSL gets defence ministry’s nod to build 12 minesweepers

PANAJI: The defence ministry has given its approval to Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to build 12 mine counter-measure vessels or minesweepers at a cost of 32,000 crore, which will not only boost the Indian Navy's maritime capability, but will also give impetus to the state economy, sources said.

On Saturday, the defence acquisition council (DAC) met in New Delhi, where the decision was taken by defence minister Manohar Parrikar to clear the Indian Navy's long pending demand for minesweepers in order to replace its ageing fleet of 12 Pondicherry and Karwar class minesweepers, which are expected to be phased out by 2020, defence sources said.

The Navy requires 24 minesweepers to clear mines laid by enemy warships and aircraft to blockade harbours during war. Minesweepers are specialized warships capable of neutralizing sea mines.

The vessel locates mines by high-definition sonar and then a remote-controlled underwater vehicle is utilized to detonate the mine. Only six to seven countries have the ability to build minesweepers and GSL would be the first in India to do so.

Defence sources said that a global tender would soon be launched for transfer of technology. Various other components would be sourced domestically.

In 2008, the defence ministry floated a tender for eight minesweepers which was bagged by Kanganam Corporation. The deal was stalled on allegations that the South Korean firm had engaged middlemen.

In November, Parrikar, while acknowledging the technical capabilities of GSL, said that he would clear the minesweepers deal. "What we are trying to do is give the orders to GSL and ask GSL to go in to the technical collaboration," Parrikar had said.

The minesweepers are usually deployed with local naval defense and search-and-rescue missions.

The Indian Navy's ageing fleet of 200-foot Pondicherry class minesweepers were built for the Indian navy by the Soviet Union during 1978-88 and are modified versions of the Russian Natya class minesweeper. The Karwar class ships, which came much later, are upgraded warships with the addition of surface-to-air missiles.
