Major gas discovery in Marri-Bugti area

ISLAMABAD: A bit of good news for the energy-starved nation — the state-run Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) is reported to have made a major gas discovery in Zin block in Balochistan’s restive Marri-Bugti area that has the potential to change the dimension of the country’s power sector.

“The first exploration well has been a great success and we have found thick zones of hydrocarbon. It seems to be a big discovery in many years,” a jubilant authoritative source told Dawn on Friday after receiving the latest reports of the discovery.

The official said the country’s largest producer had achieved the target drilling of about 2,300 metres early this week using indigenous expertise, found hydrocarbon in Zone-1, plugged it and moved into Zone-2 where it found more resources.

He said technical results were being evaluated by experts and a formal official announcement about the discovery was expected to be made on Monday. He said it would require a couple of appraisal wells before reaching a conclusion about the size of the deposit.

In reply to a question about the possibility of low heating value of the reserve in view of adjacent low-BTU (British Thermal Unit) deposit of Uch gas field, the official said it was premature to know about the heating value unless evaluation process was complete in a day or two.

But even if it was low-BTU gas it would change the country’s energy dimension because huge power plants could be installed at the site for generating low-cost electricity, he added.

The official, however, said it would take about two years before Zin resources were developed for commercial use in view of the required appraisal wells and their subsequent development.

He said the OGDCL had estimates of 8-10 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves before it moved to Zin area in September last year. He expressed the hope that the reserve would be even bigger in view of the initial results and the fact that the Zin block was hemmed in by major gas
discoveries.

Before starting the drilling, the government had to create a new wing of the Frontier Constabulary of about 500-600 personnel to provide security to the OGDCL operations because the untapped area was surrounded by major gas producing fields — Pirkoh, Loti, Sui and Uch.

The first commercial gas flows from the field is expected in early 2013.

The OGDCL had to shelve a plan to transfer ownership rights of the Zin block to a private company through a controversial deal after Dawn raised questions over the way it was being ‘formed out’ in unusual circumstances on the grounds of adverse security situation.

The government had at that time criticised the OGDCL for lack of progress in the area and threatened to terminate its licence.

There was a news few weeks ago about oil discovery in KPK(NWFP), what happen to it? Also coal discovery of Sindh & Gas discovery of Punjab????

You can check the previous threads, and also there is a sticky on Coal reserves that has continous updates.

Pakistan needs to have more security around these gas reserves as there are a lot of enemies working in this area of Pakistan.

as compared to SUI gas, who big the reserve is??

but gas discovery has meet some excitement in country like pakistan equivalent to moon/mars discovery in america :lol::lol:

It meets a lot of excitement because Pakistan is also a resource rich country like Central Asia and Middle East, and what a shame our current leaders beg everywhere they go. They think Pakistan can not survive if they dont stop begging from other countries and other countries are taking advantage of Pakistani begger leaders.

Its like a person begging others for few rupees in streets while he refuses to go to the bank to take out money from his bank account.

Significant reserves of hydrocarbon discovered in Zin Block

Wednesday, 4 Jan 2012

ISLAMABAD - Oil and Gas Development Company Limited on Tuesday announced finding significant reserves of hydrocarbons at well Zin X-I in district Dera Bugti Balochistan. A statement issued by the company said OGDCL operator of 95 per cent working interest in Zin exploration license, together with its joint venture partner Government Holdings Private Limited having five per cent working interest has discovered a hydrocarbon bearing horizon in its exploratory well Zin X-I.

It said the well was drilled down to the depth of 2300 meter targeting to test the hydrocarbon potential of pab sandstone and sui main limestone formations. Significant reserves of hydrocarbons have been found at well Zin X-1. The first targeted zone pab sandstone of cretaceous age has tested 5.48 mmcfd as through 32/64” choke at well head flowing pressure 1050 Psi. This discovery will add to the hydrocarbon reserves base of the company and its joint venture partner, bringing significant savings to the country.

The national flag carrier, OGDCL started exploratory drilling in the block located in Dera Bugti district and first well X-1 was spud in May this year. The company had obtained exploration license for Zin block in 1996. But due to the law and order issues, it could not be drilled for last 14 years. Zin block is considered a very prospective block as it is surrounded by major natural gas producing fields of Pirkoh, Loti, Sui and Uch. The work on the site was started in 2010, when the government provided the required security to the company. If the drilling proves successful the gas from the field will start flowing within next one year, the source said.

The country’s first major discovery of Sui gas field located in Dera Bugti was made in 1952. Its neighbouring district of Kohlu is attributed by experts as the most prospective area for finding major conventional hydrocarbon reserves. OGDCL has applied for security clearance for four licenses in the district including Kohlu, Jandran, Jandran West and Kalchas. OGDCL is the largest upstream company in the country having a portfolio of 77 fields, out of which 45 fields are 100 per cent owned and operated, and 32 are non-operated fields. As of December 2010, it holds 48 per cent of the country’s recoverable oil reserves, and 37 per cent of the country’s recoverable gas reserves. In terms of production, currently OGDCL delivers 56 per cent of Pakistan’s oil output, and 22 per cent of its gas production.

here we go, and people like long braied were dying that pakistan will finish if we didnt import gas from iran

Western provinces and coals of Sindh can produce plenty of gas for Pakistan, and we should also build our economy and then make plans with Qatar for undersea gas pipeline so our future generations won't have to worry about this important natural resource. Qatar has the third largest gas reserves in the world.

Pakistan should cancel both IPI and TAPI because Iran and Afghanistan are unpredictable and not stable countries. Iran is our friend one day then crosses international borders and kills our people. We can not rely on Iran. Best is to do business with Arab countries.

good news but we are never told what the estimate of these new reserves of oil and gas are in Barrels of oil or mmcfd of gas!

I would prefer we find a permenent solution in Solar Power , 400-800 Watts per home by Solar power that is 30-40% of all energy needs of typical home with no AC or Electrical Microwave

If we don't correct this dependency on Hydrocarbons we will be begging for aid all our lives

Its not hard to imagine concept of every home , in Pakistan with 2 Panels (400 watts each) , note 4 Pannels is perfect but 2 is enough to run fans , bulbs , and TV/Radio

We must throw away the petrol generators / gas generators , and instead focus on SOLAR ENERGY
FREE ... AND CLEAN

Will cost 800$ / panel 2 Pannels = 1600$ plus cost of battery and invertor etc and other wiring

May be 2500$ ??? Nothing considering how much Pakistani public waste in Petrol

solar power is expensive and night is an issue...
wind power seems mor elogical for sea cost and hydral power is an excellent option just say two or three dams can feed all of pakistan energy needs!!

bunji+basha+kalabagh=13500MW plus excisiting tarbela extension, bortha, mangla extension=4500+1300+1400 and already going neela jehlam 900MW+other minor dams 1000MW=9000
total=23000

so if we just built two more dams in addition to basha we will go to 100% hydral electricity in summer atleast

i think its not impossible to built three dams in next 10 years(originally it was in WAPADA 2025 plan)

the easiest and cheapest in kalabagh and its finacing is easy as world bank has already agreed to finance it.

ALASS politicans!!!

Yes, but one day the whole world will switch to wind power/solar power, so we should invest in that more.

we have lot fo natural resources
but 2 problems are biggest hurdle in it
1st foreign companies are sharing accurate results
2nd our leaders donot want
