Maharashtra reports over 15,000 cases for two consecutive days; Mumbai sees highest spike this year

NEW DELHI: Despite fresh restrictions in multiple districts, the Covid situation in Maharashtra continues to remain grim with the state reporting over 15,000 cases for two consecutive days.
On Saturday, Maharashtra reported 15,602 fresh coronavirus cases and 88 deaths.
This was after it reported over 15,800 new cases on Friday, its highest daily count since October last year.

Overall, Maharashtra has reported close to 2.3 million coronavirus cases so far with its active case tally at 1,18,525.
The fresh surge in cases has raised concerns in the state, which is the worst-affected by the virus in the country.
Several districts have started reimposing restrictions to curb the spread of the virus and avoid another wave after the peak in September last year.
Nagpur was the latest to impose Covid-related restrictions after it announced a complete lockdown from March 15 to March 21.
Leading India's surge
Maharashtra is among the seven states that is leading India's Covid surge.
In fact, the state has accounted for more than half of the total caseload in the country over the last few days.
Maharashtra accounted for over 62% of India's total cases on Saturday, indicating how the fresh surge is led primarily by the western state.
Areas leading the surge
Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Thane are currently the worst-affected districts in the state.
Mumbai on Saturday reported a fresh spike of 1,709 cases, the highest daily caseload this year.
The wider Mumbai division reported 3,198 new cases and 17 deaths, taking the cumulative caseload to 7,56,84 and death toll to 19,949.
Nashik division's case tally till now stood at 3,14,975 awith 2,647 fresh cases.
Nagpur division has reported 2,690 fresh cases which has pushed the tally to 2,48,912.
Pune division reported the maximum fresh cases at 3,365, pushing the overall count to 5,56,429.
