JAIPUR: Manufactured in the City, Blitzer - armoured anti-terrorist vehicle (ATV) will be deployed in Parliament to thwart attacks of terrorists on the building.

The ATV would be sent to Delhi on Saturday. It would be handed over to Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It would be stationed at the Parliament as "quick response ATV".

In 2001, terrorists had attacked Parliament and during the attack, the security agency officials were seen fighting against them without much protection. Now, the ATV would provide them a safer place to foil terrorist attacks. It is a bullet-proof vehicle manufactured from armoured steal, bought from Germany.

Two soldiers can sit in the vehicle and attack the terrorist in the bullet-proof vehicle. The vehicle has the capability to turn around 360 degrees, in stand-still position. It took almost three years for the manufacturer to complete the ATV. The 4.5-tonne ATV can move on muddy tracks and on hills easily with a speed of 25 km per hour.

"Keeping in view the security scenario and changing threat environment after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, there has been an urgent need to develop a platform on which the security personnel can undertake tactical operations in safe environment," Gurvender Jit Singh, chief executive officer Jeet & Jeet, Glass and Chemical Pvt Limited, which developed the ATV.

He said that this need was notified by higher officials from DRDO.

The vehicle is capable of resisting high powered ammunitions, including SLR, AK-47s and several high powered weapons, hand grenades and explosion protection. The vehicle has undergone stringent ballistic trials conducted by independent laboratories and end-users.

Not only the vehicle has strong power to resist high powered ammunition, but also it is quite agile. Apart from secure platform, there is a need to quickly complete the job and evacuate, which includes responding to attacks from any side of the vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with quick release firing ports from which the security forces can retaliate.

This must be a publicity stunt because there is no security utility for that vehicle in the parliament.

Well that clearly isn't true. The requirement for such a vehicle came about post 26/11 where it was felt that a vehicle was needed to provide point protection in the face of frontal fire as well as elevated attack. In confined spaces where larger armoured vehicles can't operate this vehicle will come in handy.
