Mahindra Reva reveals the Halo electric sports car


The Halo will be powered by an electric motor developing approximately 140bhp. The high capacity battery which basically runs the show can power the Halo from 0-100km/h in less than 7 seconds while the top-speed is claimed to be in excess of 200km/h.

The Halo will go up on sale in 2015-16 and will be sold both in India and in international markets.

If I was a automotive product line engineer, India may be throwing up some good stuff.

One thing, all the talk of innovation and jugaad looks like hitting target with major Corp.'s in mega verticals introducing nominal, incremental adaptation and suitabilit to their 'cut-&-paste', tried-&-tested elsewhere models. Indigenisation of components and slowly, localisation of design, this trend will continue on the upswing.

I can foresee a few trends.
  1. Diesel-electric
  2. Multi-use vehicles
  3. Cross fertilisation of green tech.
  4. Falling prices
  5. Brigding of the rural-semi urban divide
  6. 'Tooling' of vehicles so they beocme multi-purpose, 24 hrs. agri. and work tools. Eg. generator.

Nissan has displaced Maruti to become the second-largest passenger car exporter from India. Hyundai remains the number one car exporter.

Nissan has been shipping more India-built cars than Maruti in the past two months, and it has now emerged as the second big exporter of cars with its total volumes standing at 94,931 units when compared with Maruti’s exports of 79,945 units in the first 10 months of current fiscal. In the year-ago period, Nissan and Maruti exported 80,867 units and 95,526 units, respectively.

“Maruti’s exports have been impacted recently by a change in the homologation norms in the key Algerian market. Also, several African countries have imposed non-tariff barriers by signing a preferential import duty agreement with European players. It expects exports to remain under pressure for the next two-to-three quarters,’’ says Sneha Venkatraman, analyst-automobiles, HDFC Securities Ltd. Nissan has been shipping its compact car Micra and sedan Sunny, built at the Renault-Nissan alliance manufacturing unit at Oragadam near Chennai. It is exporting to over 100 countries, including Europe, Africa and Middle East. It is reported to have exported over 330,000 units till date.

Toyota’s Karnataka diesel engine plant to be ready by end-2016

The factory will take the local content of its popular Innova and Fortuner models to 80% from the current 50%

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd’s delayed diesel engine factory in Karnataka, on which the company is spending Rs.1,000 crore, will be ready for production by the end of 2016.
“In order to remain more sustainable and derisk ourselves from the fluctuating duty structures and rupee depreciation, we are increasing our localization levels by setting up the diesel engine plant,” chief operating officer Sandeep Singh said.
The facility near Bangalore will be able to make 108,000 engines a year and provide employment to 550 people, Singh said on the sidelines of the launch of a new version of Corolla Altis at the 2014 Auto Expo.
The factory will take the local content of its popular Innova and Fortunermodels to 80% from the current 50%.
Toyota, has been mulling to set up this diesel plant for nearly two years now since the 2012 Auto Expo, but delayed its plans as it was awaiting the government’s policy on diesel.
Singh, who is also the firm’s deputy managing director, said the auto maker has been absorbing “a lot of cost” by importing the engines for these two cars, and the factory will lead to significant savings, but declined to elaborate.
Toyota is not looking at launching any new products in the next two years, till it is able to become competitive in all its existing segments, said Singh.
The company is “studying” the fast-growing segment of sub-four meter sedans and compact sports utility vehicles, Singh said, but has no plans as yet to introduce these products.
Of the 88,947 units the company sold in the April to November period, 55% came from the Innova and the Fortuner. The company’s sales in this period fell 17%, according to industry lobby Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’ data.
The company will launch its Etios Cross, a hatchback, on Thursday at the expo.
