For Mir Ashfaq Baloch and other social activists in Lyari, the killing of Gulabo, a notorious gang commander, in a shootout with police in Musharraf Colony, has had a positive effect on the security and socio-political situation of the old neighbourhood of the city.

Ashfaq, a local leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, had been pressuring the law-enforcement agencies and the media by submitting applications seeking the arrest of Gulabo, who on January 17 had killed his younger brother Mir Ishtiaq Baloch, popularly known as Mullah Pappu, outside his office on Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road in Lyari.

Ishtiaq had contested the local government election for the post of the UC-8 chairman on a PML-N ticket; but lost by 40 votes.

On Wednesday, police said they had gunned down Gulabo, whose real name was Ghulam Akbar, and his brother Ghulam Mustafa alias Bhola in Musharraf Colony within the jurisdiction of the Mauripur police station. The two brothers were associated with the area’s gang leaders Baba Laadla and Ghaffar Zikri.

Faizullah Korejo, the SSP City, said Gulabo was among the most notorious gangsters of Lyari involved in many heinous crimes including murders, attempts to murder, kidnappings for ransom, extorting traders and encounters with the law- enforcement agencies.

“Among the gang commanders who had escaped the law enforcement agencies and were still operating in Lyari, he was on the top of the list,” Korejo told The News.

He said the police faced intense retaliation during the raid. “Kalakot SHO Ayaz Khan and a policeman Anwar were injured in the shootout with Gulabo and his brother,” he said.

He added that weapons were found on the gangsters.

Community leaders and police officials said since the launch of a crackdown in Lyari, Gulabo and his brothers had gone underground.

Gulabo’s family had moved to Musharraf Colony when enraged residents of Kalri had torched houses in Kalri’s Ali Muhammad Mohallah after the murder of Mir Ishtiaq Baloch.

The area’s community leaders said Gulabo’s father, Ghulam Muhammad, was also a bandit and killed in a shootout in Shershah a few years ago. Gulabo’s brother, Ghulam Mustafa alias Bhola, who was killed in the shootout along with his brother, played drums at weddings before becoming a gangster.

Gulabo’s third brother was also killed in a shootout with police few months ago.

“Gulabo worked under the leadership of Jasim Golden, a gang leader, and after his killing, he was promoted to his position,” a community leader told The News.

Currently, Gulabo, carrying a Rs2.5 million bounty on him, was an important commander of the Baba Laadla gang and his criminal network controlled Kalri and its adjacent areas before the launch of the crackdown, he added.

He said police had already killed key members of Gulabo’s network in recent months.

The residents of Kalri praised the police for killing Gulabo. “He [Gulabo] lured youths into joining his gang, using them as criminals or informers, and rewarded them with cell phones and money,” said a teacher at a local school.

Ashfaq, who showed its confidence in the performance of the law-enforcement agencies, said the operation against gangsters had no doubt restored peace in Lyari and the locals after having witnessed years of bloodshed were confident that violence was coming to an end.

“They killed my brother for the sole purpose of instilling fear of their gang into the area’s residents,” Ashfaq told The News.

He added that residents and social activists would help the law-enforcement agencies in bringing peace back to their area.
