Lunchtime at a Tibetan rural school

Jiangrexia Township Central Primary School is a typical rural boarding school located in Linzhou (Lhünzhub) County, near Lhasa, Tibet. The school principal, Tashi Dondrup, told reporters that the school was quite different from what it was when he arrived three years ago. With 8.3 million yuan (US$1.35 million) in funding from the government and programs aiding Tibet, the school began renovation and reconstruction in 2012, and now has specific classroom space for fine arts, lab experiments, music, reading, computers, and multimedia teaching. More than 380 students receive Tibetan and Mandarin Chinese bilingual education there, and they start learning English in Grade Three in primary school. The school also has a kindergarten affiliated with it, which houses more than 160 students.

According to Wang Wei, head of the Lhasa Internet Information Office, Tibet has been practicing a 15-year compulsory education system since 1995, while students in other Chinese provinces receive only 9-year compulsory education. Students in Tibet do not have to pay for their tuition and accommodation for these 15 years, including 3 years in kindergarten, 6 years in primary school and 6 years in high school.

Linzhou County's name means "naturally formed fertile soil" in the Tibetan language. It is the biggest grain producer and second-largest farming county in Lhasa.
