LAHORE - LUMS Faculty, Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) has voluntarily provided its services for the sake of revitalising Pakistan Railways for which Khawaja Saad Rafique, the Minister of the Railways visited the institution on Friday.
For this matter, 16 PhDs hailing from the background of Finance, Marketing, Strategy, Organisation Development and Operations are currently working on various projects with the PR. The objective is to support the public utility in providing quality service to the masses in a sustainable manner. This voluntary effort will also enhance the research activities at LUMS which would be beneficial for students as they will gain practical insights about public organisations. The work began on this project in late 2013 and is expected to continue until practical and feasible outcomes are reached considering the Pakistan’s socio-economic scenario.
Federal Minister was accompanied by Anjum Pervez, General Manager Operations, Javed Anwar, Additional General Manager, Zubair Shafi Ghaur, Chief Marketing Manager and Hanif Gul Director Vigilance while LUMS team was headed by Abdur Razaq Dawood Rector of SDSB, Dr. Sohail H Naqvi, Vice Chancellor and Dr Arif Nazir Butt, Dean of Business School and hosted by the SDSB External Relations Department.
This visit is a continuation of senior business faculty’s visit to Pakistan Railways Headquarters in which the Railways sought cooperation and concrete suggestions for revamping, restructuring and turn-around of Railways, which was met by a positive response from LUMS. Different delegations from both sides are regularly meeting at the level of working groups headed by team leaders working in the fields of Operations, Cost Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Strategy and Organisational Development.

Even i am against PML-N policies...........but this is really a good step, that they are bringing Educated peoples in govt. Departments .........and not just Sharif Brothers Family and Relatives. (As they are running this country like their family limited business).

They need, first of all, someone that defines the purpose of Railways, and someone, if it could be possible in addition, who has good experience in devising strategy at some successful railways. And then blend it with local experiences and good local and international expectations.

Railways have to provide easy, timely, convenient and comfortable travel between the cities. It has to be safe in a fool-proof way. It should be easy and hassle-free to travel to railway stations from most parts of the city. This means that location of central railway stations for many major cities might have to be changed since it is impossible to get there and it is probably less time-consuming to go to some other city around Lahore than to get to its central railway station in the worst kind of poor traffic.

Really the standard and image of the railways should be so good that if you want to travel to any other city, and you do not feel like driving yourself, railways should be the first choice of most residents of the city. And it has to be cheaper than other forms of travel because of its bulk-travel nature. Still being cheaper should not affect its image in any way especially among more affluent parts of the city's population meaning those who expect "better services for more money" or just like to "spend more" should like to travel using railways.

And all other things things that are associated with a good and comfortable travel should be included. Making railways profitable is one goal and running it on a long-term sustainable basis with great quality is a better goal that can be achieved in several phases. It should be a good challenge for LUMS people, and let us set the goals higher and we would like to achieve higher goals.

And some new good things might have to be dramatized like they introduce new brands that become very successful. Of course it would be right to dramatize only those things where "railway experience" that follows the publicity actually reflects the expectations of those traveling.

What % of total route is electrified ??

I hope they turn it into a model of success just like the motorway police was in late 90s.

Railways should firstly sell Agriculture land to its old employees since independence. Moreover they should build housing in each and every city where they have land ownership and facilitate their current employess there.

These are the main ways where LUMS can help them in the start.

While going through the statistics, I found that 50% of revenue comes from passenger traffic. I think, the commercial traffic should be encouraged, so that it generates lucrative income for the PR. I would really, think hard about electrification. First, increase revenue in existing routes. and establish corridors for cargo.
