The Luftwaffe has retired its oldest active unit the Lufttransportgeschwader 61 (LTG 61 air transport unit) in Penzing south Germany close to the Alps.
The unit was equipped with 90 Transall and served all aroud the world in human crisis and supply to UN units.
The reason for the retirement is simple, thei airbase was build in 1935-36, the villages around the base have grown rapidly. Now that the Luftwaffe recive the new A400M the airbase is to smal and there is no room to rebuild it with longer runway. The Bundeswehr decited to shut down the base and retire the unit. The base remain in the hand of the Bundeswehr, a research should see if they could use it in future for something other ...like a chopper base.

The last Transall is colored in a special historic painting ...
