Another project done in Musharaf's time

The Lyari Expressway project was launched on May 11, 2002 with the aim of serving as a commuting artery connecting Mauripur Road and the Super Highway and to alleviate the burden of traffic plying betweenKarachi Port and the Super Highway heading upcountry.

It will be a 16.5 km 8 lane expressway that will consist of four lanes on both sides, with two interchanges, five overpasses and five underpasses. Moreover, two lanes each will be constructed on either bank of theLyari River. Once completed, traffic volume is estimated at 34,000 vehicles. The expressway will have toll plazas at four locations.[2]

The cost of developing this expressway has been revised several times since it was first proposed. Originally estimated at Rs 5.1 billion, as of March 2006 it is expected to cost Rs 8 billion once completed.[3]

When work started on the Lyari Expressway in May 2002, the National Highway Authority (NHA) had expected to complete it in 30 months (i.e. by November 2004). Having revised the completion schedule, as of December 2006 the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), the executing agency for the NHA, expects the southbound section running from Sohrab Goth to Mauripur Road completed by the end of 2007.

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly was informed Tuesday that construction work on Lyari Expressway in Karachi will be completed by December 2014.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Aftab Sheikh told the House in response of a Calling Attention Notice that some patches of land were illegally occupied by land mafia that caused delay in construction.

"But, the government is confident that the land will be vacated and the project will be completed by December 2014," he said responding to the questions of the movers.

Lyari Expressway Project has been STOPPED for last 8 years when PPP came to power because this project required to RELOCATE KACHI ABADIS in Karachi and PPP cant do it because most of their Karachi support comes from Kachi Abadis in Karachi. So this Project is on Hold and whatever development of this Project Happened was Happened under Musharraf's era under supervision of Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad till 2007 when he had some Authorities with LB system support.

But last I heard was that they were done constructing one side of the Expressway completely and the other side was 50% done?

That was done till 2007 when Ishratul Ibad was in charge of that Project he was working on it by MQM's blessing. When PPP came to power they Stopped the project because Kachi Abadis were Threatened to be relocated to Hawksbay Housing Scheme which was specifically built for that purpose and in Karachi they get most of Support from Kachi Abadis.

Perhaps Sindh Rangers should restart the project and ask the army to step in and complete it through FWO?

Sindh Rangers has only Law Enforcement Mandate and that too required to be reinstated after every 3 months from Sindh Govt. So they cant involve in to this Affairs sadly. Only Administratively Strong Local Govt. or a completely Separate Administrative setup for Karachi is the way this Project can ever be completed which may not be Popular Idea throughout Pakistan Politically Speaking.

Rename the project to Altaf bhai liyari expressway, then see.
