Libya invites Pakistani investors for construction projects
Sunday, June 09, 2013

ISLAMABAD: Abdul Wahed Abugila Charge’d Affairs Embassy of Libya visited Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) and informed lot of construction projects were underway in Libya, which offered huge investment potential to foreign investors.

He invited Pakistani investors to explore investment opportunities in construction, infrastructure development including roads, bridges, buildings and other ongoing projects, as Libya preferred Pakistani investors compared to other countries.

He said Libya was also interested in Pakistan’s cooperation in trade, industry, agriculture and other potential areas.

He assured he would request his government to consider giving land on lease to Pakistani investors that would help in improving agricultural productivity in Libya.

He said Libya was also giving preference to Pakistani labour as they were playing crucial role in the economic development of Libya.

Libyan Embassy was issuing 150-200 daily visas to Pakistanis, as there was enough scope for Pakistani talent in Libya.

Abugila stressed for the need of frequent exchange of trade delegations, increased cooperation between trade bodies of two countries and activation of Pak-Libya Business Council to explore new areas of mutual cooperation and start a new chapter of good relations between the two countries.

Zafar Bakhtawari President ICCI said there was a need to transform relations into flourishing trade, commerce and economic ties to achieve mutually beneficial results.

He said Pakistan was an agricultural country and Libya should give land on lease to Pakistani agriculturalists so that they could contribute in developing agriculture sector in Libya and improve its agricultural productivity.

He said Pakistani investors were doing this in Sudan and achieving good results. Therefore Libya should give serious consideration to this proposal seriously, which would bring the two countries further closer.

Bakhtawari said ICCI would soon start initiatives to activate Pak-Libya Business Council as it would help in promoting direct connectivity between the private sectors of both countries.

He said Libyan Embassy should share information regarding planned trade fairs and exhibitions in Libya with ICCI so that our businessmen could participate in such events and explore business opportunities in potential areas. He said ICCI would take a business delegation to Tripoli to explore areas of bilateral cooperation.

He invited a delegation of Libyan entrepreneurs to ICCI and assured of providing all sorts of help and support to make its visit productive. He stressed for regular interaction between Embassy and Chamber to keep good relations on track. ppi

.. I am really confused in this relation one broke nation asking for another broke nation ...

Libya however should have been ideal nation to forge defense ties 10-15 years ago , low price oil and better economy would have resulted with such business ties

Lets see what this new stuff entitles to

Libya's economy is growing at a phenomenal rate of 121%. It supplies 10% of oil to the European Union.

They have a lot of money, a very big country for their tiny population and a lot to build over the next few years.

Libyans have always had very very close relations with Pakistan, hence Gaddafi Stadium. It is also well known that Libya had also financed quite a bit of the Pakistani nuclear program.

Libya is issuing 150 visa to Pakistanis daily, that's 1,050 visas a week and over 4,200 visas were month.

They had a lot of Pakistani expatriate community working in Libya prior to Colonel Moammer Gaddafi's fall.

Pakistanis who are currently being deported from Saudi Arabia could get a second chance in Libya. So, a very good news.

Well I would like that issues such as proper employee rights are established because in middle east workers were paid pennies for decades and not proper wages.

Back when Middle east went thru the booming period these aspects were over looked so employees were paid substantially low wages vs workers in lets say Europe who came to work in Middle east

It would be idea if all the expatriates come back and they build their own country first because this would force the government to "create" jobs

Ideal scenario is Pakistani workers get hired via Pakistani Company , that negotiates a good salary for workers, and then collects taxes from wages and deposits the funds in Pakistani system if any worker rights are abused , they would fall under the jurisdiction of Local Law

> Banking sector
> Telecom
> Airlines operation

Are three areas where Pakistan could benefit if carefully planned moves are made

Sending undocumented resources is a very low term solution

Of course, every country does that. Every country welcomes investment. Pakistan has a very strong cement sector, if Pakistani investors take interest in libyan infrastructure projects, Libyan construction market can be opened for Pakistan's Cement Sector. I was surprised to read that Pakistan caters around 90% South Africa's demand for cement.

Alot of jobs nowadays for Pakistanis in Libya. Great gesture from our brother country.

No one should be sent

a) Prior to Labour Treaty
b) Security of workers guarenteed
c) Proper salary structure

Libya is a time tested friend of Pakistan on the broader scheme of things. But with that said - from a purely business perspective - Libya will be a risky venture as long as warring tribals and warlords and out of control factions are battling and having turf wars. Libya needs a central government with good control of the country. Not different groups fighting over oil resources and destabilizing the nation.

But besides that - yes we must work with Libya and invest in eachothers countries

Pakistani Mobile Carriers have chance to compete and establish Ufone and other Telecom companies huge profits awaiting.

22 killed in day of clashes over Libyan airport - US News (2 hours ago)

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — A day of militia fighting over control of the international airport in Libya's capital killed 22 people, the country's interim government said Sunday, part of the worsening chaos gripping the country.

No thank you ...we need to have enough local projects to fix up Pakistan don't we need man power for coal projects and iran-pakistan gas pipeline ? or building some dam???

Put the people to work there

Well that was a false , notion of democracy , the real ones in Egypt were overthrown etc (sure they were crazy and lunatic in their own way but they were selected government) by voting

This stuff in Libya is funded by outside

Pretty sad state of affairs just 3-4 years ago future looked bright for Libya they had joined international community giving up their weapons and expecting a honest helping hand instead they got was weapon supplies to few hand full of rebels and now the country is doomed

Not to mention how much financial support Libya provided to poor African nations

A lesson learned for all nation never let in UN inspectors in your country and never give up your arms that is the motto of that story

They tried the same "Trick" with Syria but luckily syria survied due to Russia
