LCH to take first test flight by month-end

India’s first indigenously made Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) will be making its maiden flight soon, most likely by the end of this month.

Managing Director of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s helicopter complex R Srinavasan today said development of the LCH was well on its way and the attack helicopter would have its initial flight very soon. “The LCH has successfully completed its initial ground test runs,” he told a seminar on helicopters, Helipower India, organised by the Rotary Wing Society of India

The twin-engine LCH is a pure attack helicopter made by the design experience gained from the Dhruv Advance Light Helicopter developed by the HAL. Currently around 100 Dhruv helicopters are being used by the Indian armed forces and paramilitary forces like the Coast Guard and the BSF, civil operators like Pawan Hans and the ONGC, and state governments like Jharkhand. Dhruv is also being used by foreign countries like Ecuador, Nepal, Mauritius and Male.

Development time for the LCH was reduced because most of its components had been already checked out on Dhruv. HAL officials say the attack helicopter will have several advance systems, which are available on very few helicopters worldwide, and it had been developed keeping in mind the Indian terrain and operating conditions.

At present the only attack helicopters available with the IAF are Russian-made Mi-25 and Mi-35, which are not optimised for operations at high altitude. Experts say if during Kargil war, which was fought at very high altitude, the LCH was operational the scenario would have been very different.

The Shakti engine being used in the LCH has been jointly developed by the HAL and Turbomeca of France with primary focus on high altitude operation in Himalayas. Besides operations at very high altitudes, it is expected to meet operational requirements like air support, anti-infantry and anti-armour roles.

Best advance systems have been fitted on the helicopter, procured from different vendors worldwide that will ensure cutting edge technology to our defence operators, HAL officials say.

The HAL has also carried out modifications on some variants of its Dhruv chopper for anti-Naxalite operations with suggestions from paramilitary forces involved in anti-Naxal operations.

The two-day conference is being attended by civil and military helicopter pilots and professionals, besides representatives of chopper producing firms and officials of civil aviation and defence ministries.

Where did you get that news? LCH have Shakti engine jointly developed by HAL-Snecma.

HAL's Light Utility Copter Programme Invites Foreign Engine Bids
Remember the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) that HAL is developing to meet a partial requirement of 187 helicopters by the Indian armed forces? HAL has now floated a tender inviting bids from "reputed TurboShaft Engine Manufacturers world over who would like to offer their engine along with associated instrumentation for integration on Light Utility Helicopter (LUH)." HAL reveals that during the production phase of the LUH (2013-14), 210 engines will be procured in phases. For starters, they want two flight-cleared engines delivered for testing and prototype flights by December 2011.

Ok, now for some engine specs. HAL is looking for a turboshaft with dual channel FADEC, with an independent backup fuel-control system in the event the FADEC packs up. The engine must allow time from start-up to take-off of 5-minutes or less. The dry weight of the engine, FADEC, backup controls and accessories must not exceed 200-kg, and it must be fully tropicalised to operate in the temperature range of -35°C to 50°C and a service ceiling of 7000m.

And obviously, since HAL can't pull it off alone, "HAL is also interested in entering into a long term business agreement with willing partners to take-up license manufacturing of engine or its parts at its facilities aimed to jointly meet the engine requirement on a global basis on mutual benefit terms. Consent for further exploration of transfer of technology for license manufacturing is to be indicated with sufficient details."

It must be remembered Chinese are using "foreign" European engine in their attack

The new engine is for LCH or LUH? I guess it is for LUH, not LCH. :bounce:

LCH already have an engine named Shakti. LUH needs a lighter engine because it will be an observation helicopter for high altitude.

I Know the difference but it seems that you will understand in about six months that flight testing is going to continue for the next three yrs.The govt and its subsidiaries have beeen lying to us and it became apparent when the LCH was supposed to fly on 2nd feb.Try to read between lines

Stop day dreaming! :angry: The news report you posted was about LUH not LCH. From where did you got the news that HAL is going to buy new engine from Snecma for LCH? For your acknowledgment, its HAL that developed LCH not DRDO.

Are you sure you don't confuse it with the Kaveri-Snecma co-development? Snecma offered to improve our Kaveri engine up to 90kN thrust, so it could be used in LCA (later orders, or for exports), or in future maybe in MCA.

Heard the news before, they should stop talking and do it on time for once.

Friends I am on ur side only and would have loved to see the LCH flying in indian colours yesterday but since our government and its subsidiaries are liars Things are rarely what they seem and no I am not confusing it with Kaveri, only saying that it will meet the same fate. I will be more than happy to be wrong but must wait for 3-6 six months since flights will take place and the truth that an underpowered engine is the problem will come out for a five year tamasha for LCH to be inducted in our forces.
