Latvia builds 23 km barrier wall along border with Russia Latvia has installed a 23 km long fencing wall on the border with Russia to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country, press secretary of the Latvia's Border Guard Service Eugenia Pozniak said, according to Delfi.lv.

The construction of the fence started in 2015, and it is expected to be completed before 2019. A 65 km long frontier has already been equipped there, Delfi.lv reports.

In 2017, a total of EUR 6.3 million were allocated to equip a 150 km long frontier and erect a 60 km wall, Pozniak said. As UNIAN reported earlier, Estonia and Lithuania plan to build fencing walls on the border with Russia.

On Wednesday the 1st February, 2017 the State Border Guard's officials detected 26 offenders at external borders and within the country.

9 trespassers were detected at external borders, including: at the Terehova and the "Riga" Airport Border Control Points 2 Russian and 2 Turkish citizens, who violated the conditions of residence in the territory of the Schengen states (exceeded the duration of stay of the visa, were not in possession of valid visas or residence permits) were detected. The record-keeping regarding administrative violations, committed by the one Turkish citizen, was not commenced, while the other persons were subject to administrative liability.

While carrying out immigration control measures within the country violations of entry or residence conditions were detected to 5 persons - 3 Lithuanian and 2 Latvian citizens.

Within the framework of vehicles and vessels operation the State Border Guard's officials detected offences committed by 12 persons - 5 Latvian, 4 Belarusian, 2 Lithuanian and 1 Russian citizen.

Already Tanks are being deployed by Russian and Belarusian armed forces close to the Latvian border.

Latvia is planning on building a fence on the border with Belarus to help combat illegal border crosses, State Border Guard Chief Normunds Garbars told LETA on November 12.

He said that next year's budget has funds set aside to begin creating a border zone on the Latvia-Belarus border.

He said that work could begin in the second half of the year, and that a high fence will be constructed on certain stretches of the border with Belarus.

Officials in Latvia said Wednesday that a 120-kilometre (74-mile) border fence with Belarus will be built as soon as a similar fence along the Baltic state’s border with Russia has been completed in 2018.

Speaking on Latvian public radio, Olegs Jemasovs, the border guard chief for the southeast Daugavpils region, said 3.7 million euros ($4.3 million) would be spent on securing the country’s eastern borders in 2018, with the total cost of the Belarus fence expected to reach 10.5 million euros.

"The fence will be two metres high with barbed wire on top. It will not be a monolithic fence -- there will be breaks due to natural obstacles such as lakes, swamps and rivers," Jemasovs said.

In 2016, the European Union and NATO member state of two million people started construction of a fence along its border with Russia, to the north of the Belarus border, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The Belarus fence is slated to be finished by the end of 2020.

Officials are keen to stress that the purpose is not military, despite increased tensions with Russia.

Both Russia and Belarus have become people smuggling routes with dozens of illegal migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere arrested each year seeking a back door into the EU.
