KARACHI:

Karachi witnessed a surge of violence on Thursday when a total of 17 men were killed in different parts of the city.

Mufti Abdul Majeed Deenpuri, the vice president of Binoria seminary, his colleague Mufti Saleh and student Hassan Ali were killed in a brazen attack on Shahra-e-Faisal near Nursery. The cleric and his companions were shot in a targeted attack while they were travelling by road in a white van.

Television channels played security camera footage showing a motorcycle intercepting the white van to make it slow down. Dressed in a white shirt and dark-coloured pants, an unidentified man then walked up to the right side of the car and shot the passengers at close range.

Meanwhile, the motorcycle rider was joined by another man, seen wearing a cap, as well as the shooter, before all of them fled the scene. “The suspects used a 9mm pistol,” said a police official. Funeral prayers of the deceased were offered at the Binoria Mosque, Karachi.

Earlier, the body of a wanted Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) activist, Muhammad Irfan, was found in Baldia Town, along with the bodies of Muhammad Sameer and Syed Amjad.

Meanwhile, Haroon Ilyas, 40, and Raziq Palari, who went missing in Balochistan’s Saakran area a couple of weeks ago, were also found dead in Surjani Town. In Gulshan-e-Ghazi, a 28-year-old petrol pump attendant Gul Nawaz was ordered by two men on a motorcycle to fill the tank for free. When he refused, they shot him dead. The men also stole Rs3,000 from him.

Meanwhile, three workers of a non-governmental organisation that runs health facilities on the outskirts of Karachi were kidnapped by unidentified men on Thursday.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Hands Chief Executive Officer Dr Tanveer Ahmed confirmed the incident and said the three activists were in Noor Mohammad village for field work.

This turf war will claim more lives. May affect economy.

Where from you got that title ... I havnt seen such a dumb think tank ever...Dont play so easily in the hands of those who wanna divide Pakistan on the ethnic and religious lines...All these attacks which are very conveniently labeled as sectarian are conducted by same people in same manner and using same weapons indicating its being done by some paid men without any religious motivation and that has been stated repeatedly in intelligence reports if you ever happened to came across one.
@WebMaster @nuclearpak Please close this thread or get its title changed as it will only increase religious intolerance

Some insights here. Shias are increasingly responding to their killings. Sipah E Mohammed is the primary organization that fights back against LEJ. But it attacks LEJ/SSP members selectively. The LEJ however attacks Shia civilians from all walks of life. First attack was conducted by LEJ, the second attack was SM or other Shia organizations or independent groups.

Karachi is becoming a place of war between these 2. Furthermore in Quetta you will notice LEJ is much more powerful. It is a worrying development. Also the attack on LEJ leader last time resulted in death of policemen too. So basically the indiscriminate killings in Quetta and other parts are resulting in extreme rage among shias.

Just a keen observer here on ethnic, sectarian and terrorism issues.

This is a place for not just debate but for resolution of our issues. Ignoring a topic will only make things worse. If they believe the thread should be closed it will be. This has been going on for a while. How will it create religious intolerance. Does discussing the Taliban increase intolerance. Not discussing them helps the narrative of the terrorists.

These are 2 militant groups, one worse than the other. The title would be bad if Shia or sunni had been used anywhere. LEJ is involved. We have to accept the crimes committed. I am a sunni and I greatly sympathize with the Shias. This is not a debate to be ignored. LEJ is often working in conjunction with TTP today and claimed the Ashura blasts in Karachi on behalf of TTP-someone I knew- a sunni died there.

We are not here to ignore important topics. Webbie will delete if it challenges rules.

okay just give some proof that these organizations which are labeled to represent these two islamic sects are actually funded by these sects ? Secondly prove that these are behind these recent killings of men on both sides?

I made no such statement. I even stated that Sunnis have been killed by LEJ if they refused to consider Shia heretical, supported US/Pakistan government or testified against Malik Ishaq and his band of thugs. Furthermore I have stated earlier that Sipah E Mohammad has the (moral) support of a number of Sunni intellectuals who were targeted by LEJ extremists. For example case to note here is the family of Shia-Sunni amn tehreek guy Amjad. He was killed by LEJ for promoting Shia Sunni harmony despite being a Sunni.

That support has resulted in the attacks being limited to ASWJ/SSP and LEJ militants only rather than being committed on civilians. You will notice they rarely target innocent civilians unlike LEJ which is notorious for this.

Furthermore LEJ is known as anti-Shia because the majority of its victims are Shi'ites but a lot of its victims aren't. A hindu doctor was targetted in Quetta and murdered a month ago by LEJ.

I never stated they represent the vast majority of Shias or Sunnis. But anger boils up when 2-5 innocents die daily and results in support or sympathy for groups like Sipah e Mohammed. Personally despite being a Sunni I believe Shias have a right to get justice. But he real failure when people are thinking like "vengeful people" (as vigilante's themselves or sympathizing with vigilante's) lies totally on law enforcement and police.

Turning an issue into a Shia-Sunni issue is in the mind of the person. If we sympathize with our people and recognize their suffering there will be no issue. But we should be willing to call a spade a spade and Minocher Bhandara sahab states clearly in his book.

I am little worried for India now.:fie: What happens if Khuda na Khasta they penetrate our security architecture, mingle with respective sects(lots of disturbance these days:undecided:) & this kind of terror comes to our land. Our agencies must have hard time keeping tab over such kind of people & their activities. It is bound to happen if not today then tomorrow. Better to be prepared.

Post corrected. It said take justice instead of get. Courts have to get Malik Ishaq and top leaders of LEJ. They hide among population and are everywhere.

They all LeJ, SSP & Sipah-e-Muhammad are terrorist ... They never belong to any sect infact ..

okay just give some proof that these organizations which are labeled to represent these two islamic sects are actually funded by these sects ? Secondly prove that these are behind these recent killings of men on both sides?

Truly said

Man... what is wrong with this government ...

Why don't they just order the Army to move into the city and take these thugs to cleaners.

Just give army six months and they will bring these so called Jungzoos to their knees.

You have an over active Army ... why don't use it at the place where it is most required.

MQM is clearly supporting Sipah e Muhammad and Death squads of both terrorist outfits are working together to spread shia sunni hatred. Imagine who can kill 2 people who were associated with tablighee jamaat and were well know social workers within 1 km range of 90. No one can do that except MQM. I think PPP is also involved in this as Zardari don't want elections soon.

Well we all know Iran is supporting Sipah e Muhammad and some middle east countries are funding Lashkar e Jhangavi. Basically these countries are fighting their wars in Pakistan. Off course India and US are also carrying out their operations through TTP.
