ISLAMABAD: China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects were progressing satisfactorily and a number of large-scale projects would be completed over the next few months, said Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese Embassy Lijian Zhao on Friday.

Addressing a seminar on ‘Belt and Road Initiative and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor: Impact on Developments in South West Asia’, Lijian said that the Sukkur-Multan M-5 motorway, which was the largest project under CPEC worth $2.9 billion, was due to be completed by June, whereas Thakot-Havelian section of Karakoram Highway was likely to be ready by the end of the year.

The seminar deliberated on the rise of China as an economic power and its political, economic, societal and technological impacts on the region as well as across the world. The 1,320 MW coal-fired power plant set up at Hub would also be fully functional by “the end of spring”, he added. The Chinese diplomat said that work on Karot and Suki-Kinari Power hydro-power plants and Gwadar port and Free Zone was also in progress.

He also emphasised on strengthening people-to-people contact to complement strong bilateral political, economic and strategic ties. Lijian said that since that launch of the Belt and Road Initiative, China had invested $28.9 billion in 82 economic zones in countries that were part of the initiative with 3,995 Chinese companies setting up businesses there.

However, he maintained, Pakistan had not received investment under this head because economic zones had not started here as yet.

This was the real plan which India don't like it. As per CPEC from 2019 to 2021, CPEC zones to be establish all over countries and and Chinese will handle and operate these zones and transfer all low tech industries here in Pakistan and this will result a export jump to 20 to 40 Billion dollar and Pakistan start making more money from Export alone.

Exactly. This phase will prove to be a real game changer for Pakistan because previously emphasise was on power projects to remove power shortages. Now necessary roads infrastructure in place, its time for SEZs all over the country. We all were hoping for this phase for the last 4 years.

That phase was so that when they move industries, we have enough power to run them

"International CPEC Workshop 2019" (ICPECW) to be held in Pakistan and China from 17th April to 3rd May 2019. The whole concept started with an important question that Opportunity and National Defence University have been trying to address: “What would it take to ensure the best possible outcome from CPEC?

We found a solution in developing an exclusive learning, networking and policy advocacy platform spread across Beijing, Islamabad and Gwadar; facilitated by visits, seminars, policy discussions, networking events and meetings with top leaders in politics, military, bureaucracy and business to address the communication gap among stakeholders; and influence policymaking on CPEC in Pakistan and China to drive positive change.

Based on the philosophy of assembling the best brains at key venues, ICPECW aims to shape the future of CPEC through creating a well-balanced community of thinkers, innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders from diverse segments of the society to collectively provide policy inputs to key stakeholders involved in the development of CPEC.

  • “The ministry has started receiving a list of the projects from provinces, which will be discussed and evaluated by both the Chinese and local experts. The $1 billion investment will be a grant from China under the multi-billion dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC),” said the official sources.

Before the visit of these experts, the Ministry of Planning and Development is due to hold a meeting with all the stakeholders on Feb 25. This meeting will scrutinize the proposals made by the provinces. After the scrutiny, a priority list of the projects will be finalized and then shared with the Chinese team.

The experts are expected to visit Pakistan from Feb 26. During the visit, the Chinese experts will also hold meetings with representatives of provinces and concerned officials to discuss the provincial priorities in the social sector.
