Former chief cleric of Islamabads Lal Masjid is trying to rally support of countrys apex judiciary against Musharraf. Both have common cause against the former military ruler. While fortified mosque in the heart of the capital was attacked under Musharraf order to evict terrorists reported to be holed up there in 2007, he had also dismissed and detained top judges in the same year. The cleric was caught while fleeing the mosque in burqa, head-to-toe cover used by women, when the authorities had allowed women to leave the mosque premises. After a couple of months of Lal Masjid incident, Musharraf had sacked all top judges considered by him to be hostile against his rule. The democratic government of Zardari upheld Musharraf decision of ousting the judges who were restored after Lawyers Movement in March, 2009.
Maulana Abdul Aziz today filed an application in the Supreme Court requesting that former president Pervez Musharraf be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL). If the request is granted, Musharraf will not be allowed to leave the country. The application, filed by Azizs lawyer Advocate Tariq Asad, maintained that Musharraf was a prime suspect in the Lal Masjid operation and is wanted by the government in several cases.
Musharraf has returned to Pakistan after ending his self-exile after a court in Karachi granted him protective bail against any arrest. All the cases including murder of Benazir Bhutto, Akbar Bugti and lal Masjid Operation were registered against him in his absence. In the case of Benazir murder, Interpol refused to arrest Musharraf citing insufficient evidence of his direct involvement saying the case was made out on political considerations.
It was on July 3, 2007, when Musharraf ordered a military operation against the mosque for challenging the writ of the state. The military besieged the mosque for 12 days before assaulting the compound, an attack in which hundreds of students were killed as claimed by mosque administration. The military carried out operation when the security personnel were attacked and killed by the terrorists hiding in the mosque. They had kidnapped people including some Chinese and forcibly occupied government property for extension of the madrassa adjacent to the mosque and had established their own government inside the mosque. The military operation was conducted after strong criticism from civil society for governments apathy over losing its writ right in the heart of the capital.
