Lakhvi affair to affect Modi’s visit to China, Xi visit to Pakistan: report

India expects China to use its influence over Pakistan to resolve the delicate situation thrown up by the release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attack from prison, said a report on the Times of India website.

“Any gesture from China is bound to have a very positive effect on negotiations during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Beijing next month,” a source cued on government thinking told TNN. Both sides want to make the visit a big success and some political gestures can pave the path for smooth negotiations, he said.

India has also conveyed its expectation from Beijing to Chinese authorities, the report said. Though China is unlikely to publicly express its displeasure over the action of Pakistan, whom it regards as all-weather friend, Beijing can still use diplomatic channels to express its concern at Lakhvi’s release.

The episode might also delay Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Islamabad because he would not want to be seen endorsing the Pakistani action, the report quoted an unnamed Chinese expert.

“It is a very complex issue. China wants good relations with both countries. But we don’t want to be seen backing one against the other,” he said. China is Pakistan’s closet allay but Beijing needs India for its vast market and international influence, he added.

Indian officials worry China will reiterate its old stance about not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries in order to keep silent on the Lakhvi release. China may also be afraid about angering extremist groups in Pakistan because some of them are known to instigate terrorism in the Chinese province of Xinjiang across the border.

Modi’s success obtaining support from the United States and France on his stance over the Lakhvi release is also weighing on Chinese diplomats, said the report.

India, US ‘gravely’ concerned as Lakhvi walks out of prison

ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of 2008 Mumbai attacks, was released from Adiyala jail on Friday. “Lakhvi has been released and he is out of the jail now,” his lawyer, Malik Nasir Abbas, told Reuters on Friday. “I don’t know where he will go now.”

A security official also confirmed his release. He was freed a day after the Lahore High Court declared his detention illegal. The Punjab government last month detained Lakhvi hours before a court ordered his release. Earlier, he was granted bail by an anti-terror court in December, which infuriated New Delhi and the government quickly slapped him with a detention order under the “Maintenance of Public Order” law. The Islamabad High Court suspended that order, but the Supreme Court restored it in January.

Last month, the high court again set aside the detention order, saying government lawyers had failed to provide evidence to justify Lakhvi`s detention.

India’s Ministry for External Affairs said before the release that its concern about Lakhvi had been made clear to Pakistan.
“The fact is that known terrorists not being effectively prosecuted constitutes a real security threat for India and the world,” an Indian ministry spokesman said.
“This also erodes the value of assurances repeatedly conveyed to us with regard to cross-border terrorism.”
India blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba for the Mumbai attack. Ten gunmen infiltrated the city by boat and spent three days spraying bullets and throwing grenades around city landmarks.

Indian investigators said Lakhvi was the Lashkar-e-Taiba military chief. He was arrested in Pakistan in 2009 in connection with the attack.

His lawyer told Reuters his client has been granted bail because of insufficient evidence.
His release prompted some outrage on social media.

“Dear Pakistani courts,” read one tweet. “Would it take Lakhvi to mow down children in a Peshawar school for you to see him for the terrorist he is?” The US State Department on Friday said it was “gravely” concerned about the release on bail of Lakhvi.

State spokesman Jeff Rathke said US officials were considering what steps to take next.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office, while commenting on the recent Lahore High Court order of setting aside the detention of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, on Friday said that case is still subjudice. Responding to a question regarding the remarks of the Indian spokesperson on the recent LHC order, he said, “The case of Mumbai attack suspects is subjudice and it would not be proper to cast aspersions on Pakistan’s commitment to countering terrorism at a time when Pakistan has entered a critical stage of defeating the menace of terrorism.”

The spokesperson said, “Inordinate delay in extending cooperation by India, complicated the case and weakened the prosecution.” “We respect the judicial process and are confident that it would serve the interest of justice,” she said.

Yeah US is so much concerned that they decided to sell billion dollar worth equipment to Pakistan including the Zulus

As for China good luck with that.

Dream on. Lakhvi is free because there is no evidence to charge him because the guy who could have lead to his conviction was hanged without ever allowing Pakistani prosecutes to even establish is identity let alone question him. India is responsible for Lakhvi's release by killing the potential witness without due process in Pakistan. Stop crying now..
