LAIKA Russia Next Gen Nuclear Attack Submarine and What Pakistan Should learn from It

The recent sale of US ASW Helicopters to the Indian Navy closes a gap in Indian capabilities. They are acquire the export variant of one of the best ASW systems out there. To meet this challenge, Pakistan has been upgrading its Agosta 90B subs in Turkey with defenses against Torpedoes, but shoudl also be looking at acquiring Air defense capabilities. A dual mode IR/Radar Guided variant (similar to the Israeli Stunner) of systems like the Turkish Hisar (25 km) were carried in a torpedo tube or VLS it could not only defeat the ASW Helicopter, but enemy MPA as well. Another option for surface defense would be a mast mounted short range SAM system (5-6 km). While this is not linked to Laika; it follows the keep it simple mindset. We have 8 Subs under contract with China, and we should make them capable of dealing with the threats, and be capable to deliver deterrence for decades to come.


Laika is being designed to be simpler then their latest designs. It is suppose to be analogous to the US Virginia Class and will carry Supersonic and Hypersonic Cruise missiles as one of its primary weapons in VLS tubes. It will have a conformal main sonar array and not a round array. It will feature a standard (non pump-jet) propeller.

What would be guidance of such missles..
A missle will also give away tge sub position especially if its VLS

Guidance would be a Dual-mode Seeker similar to the Israeli Stunner, IIR/Active RF to combat countermeasures. The missile maybe fired without a sub-mounted aesa guiding it, using the IIR sensor to get close, and switch to the active RF seeker in the terminal phase to ensure the kill.

If guidance is necessary to ensure the kill, then a small mast mounted AESA Radar could be carried to meet the challenge, or ... even a buoy attached to a fiber-optic cable with a small AESA radar, so that the sub can stay underwater and launch from well below the surface. I understand at almost the surface the radar horizon would be limited, hence why some kind of mast would need to be built into it. While this would be challenging, it would severely reduce the risk to the submarine and therefore ensure the submarine can complete its mission.

The most unique aspect of Stunner—which was co-developed by American missile maker Raytheon and Israel's Rafael—is its use of dual-mode terminal homing. Its canted "dolphin" nose houses both imaging infrared and active electronically scanned array millimeter-wave radar seekers. This makes the weapon far more challenging to decoy or jam and more reliable overall in intercepting whatever its target may be, from short-range ballistic missiles to stealth cruise missiles. Beyond its cutting-edge dual-mode seeker, the missile is packed with advanced and highly miniaturized systems, including a data link that is fully networked with its David Sling battery and other offboard sensor systems and platforms. The missile is also super maneuverable with an advanced propulsion system and uses a hit-to-kill concept of operations, meaning it does not carry a traditional warhead. It slams into its target instead. This allows the missile to be far lighter, more compact, and more maneuverable than its traditional high-explosive packing counterparts.

AESA millimeter 3D radar + dual electro-optical/(FPA)/imaging infrared (CCD/IIR) seeker + asymmetric 360 degree multi-seeker sensor engagement + 3 way data link with advanced real time automatic and manual retargeting + ECCM & IRCCM

VLS would be when the sub is a tough spot being being chased down by a MPA or ASW Helicopter or multiples of each or a combination. Use of a VLS would be an option after a Torpedo launched option fails or runs out, as a last ditch effort, once the enemy has the sub cornered. On the other hand, with a VLS based system, many more SAMs can be launched against a target, to ensure it is destroyed. This maybe very helpful if a sub is being hunted down by multiple P-8 and Frigates equipped with MH-60R ASW helicopters. The enemy may not give up for days if they know a sub is in the area, and once they have located it, they will try to move heaven and earth to destroy that submarine, even moving their own subs in to try to hunt it down. If deep in enemy territory, with an AIP submarine it would be a matter of time, before the sub is positively cornered and forced to surface. With good SAM defenses, if the Submarine can destroy as many of the enemy ASW assets, it can try to go deep in hopes of hiding in the different thermal layers. that would be where it would sprint, use other evasive maneuvers, and deploy other decoys to divert enemy follow up ASW efforts. It just maybe able to either resume its mission or return to base to fight another day.

I guess PN should start looking for new submarines. Laika can be a good option.
