Lahore: Punjab University scholar discovers bio-insecticide for cotton pests
PhD scholar Deeba Noreen Baig, working with Prof AR Shakoori of the Punjab University School of Biological Sciences, has discovered a bacteria-based, environment-friendly bio-insecticide to combat cotton pests/insects, stated a press release issued by the varsity on Wednesday.
Defending her PhD thesis, Cloning and Molecular Characterisation of cry1Ac Gene from Local Isolates of Bacillus Thuringiensis in a public seminar, Deeba highlighted the importance of the findings. She said that commercial trials in the coming years would clear the genetically-engineered product for commercial use by Pakistani companies. Source: Daily Times, 7/8/2008
