Lahore gets most FBR notices for dodging taxes
ISLAMABAD: The home constituency of incumbent ruling elite of PML-N leadership, Lahore has the maximum number of potential tax dodgers, if the number of notices sent by FBR is any indication.
Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has so far sent notices to 30,333 individuals who possessed plots in posh areas, owned expansive bungalows, had latest model vehicles, and traveled abroad frequently, as well as to those who enjoy many other luxuries of life but have never bothered to pay a penny into the tax net.
“Lahore is on the top by receiving 7,065 tax notices so far out of total over 30,000 notices in first three months (July-Sept) of the current fiscal year,” official data of FBR available with The News disclosed on Thursday.
The PML-N led government is considered a business friendly regime but so far the FBR has sent out the highest number of notices to the hometown of PM Nawaz Sharif contrary to the general perception that the political leadership is not serious about initiating tax reforms.
It is yet to be seen how the FBR will be able to get actual revenues from potential dodgers without witnessing any political interference. So far, it should be appreciated that the FBR is not under pressure to dispatch notices on the basis of its information and with the help of Nadra’s database.
Interestingly, Regional Taxpayer Office (RTO) Peshawar has clinched second position by sending 3,364 notices to potential dodgers. The RTO Multan is 3rd while RTO Karachi is lower even than some other cities like Rawalpindi and Sialkot.
In a bid to comply with performance criteria under IMF’s bailout package of $6.67 billion, the FBR has agreed to send 10,000 notices to potential dodgers on monthly basis with the purpose to broaden the narrow tax base.
Of over 180 million population, the number of income tax return filers is dismally low standing at just over 700,000.Out of total notices sent out to 30,333, Regional Taxpayer Office (RTO) Abbottabad dispatched notices to 478 potential tax dodgers who, according to FBR data possessed taxable income but never bothered to come into tax system.
The RTO Bahawalpur sent out 1,030 notices, RTO Faisalabad 1,697, RTO Gujranwala 1,432 notices, RTO Hyderabad 1,046 notices, RTO Islamabad 1,848 notices, RTO Karachi 2,005 notices, RTO Lahore 7,065 notices, RTO Multan 2,965 notices, RTO Peshawar 3,364 notices, RTO Quetta 1,067 notices, RTO Rawalpindi 2,434, RTO Sargodha 1,183, RTO Sialkot 2,340 and RTO Sukkur 359 in first three months.
Out of total notices of 30,000, around 1000 have responded back and got themselves registered into tax system by obtaining National Tax Number (NTN) and again Lahore tops in getting registration as there have been 271 individuals who got registration into FBR system.
There are only 14 persons in RTO Abbottabad who were registered into tax system, 47 in RTO Bahawalpur, 89 in RTO Faisalabad, 25 in Gujranwala, 12 in Hyderabad, 112 in Islamabad, 100 in Karachi, 130 in Multan, 62 in Peshawar, only 04 in Quetta, 99 in Rawalpindi, 29 in Sargodha, 45 in Sialkot and 07 in Sukkur.
So far only 174 individuals who have filed their income tax returns in first three months through ongoing exercise of broadening of tax base out of which Lahore has been again on top where 36 individuals filed their returns.
There have been 4 persons in RTO Abbottabad who filed income tax returns, 4 persons in Bahawalpur, 23 in Faisalabad, only 1 in Gujranwala, 2 in Hyderabad, 19 in Islamabad, 15 in Karachi, 36 in Lahore, 24 in Multan, 9 in Peshawar, 2 in Quetta, 30 in Rawalpindi, 1 in Sargodha, 4 in Sialkot and zero in Sukkur.Through the ongoing broadening of tax base exercise, the FBR has received Rs7.29 million along with filed returns.
