Does any one have an update on the Karachi Circular Railway and Lahore Rapid Mass Transit System ? I tried looking for any type of recent news on them but couldn't find any.
 
Few months back i heard one senior government official of Punjab (probably from the roads and transport authority) saying on TV that Lahore metro project was started in 90s and initial bids were received and successful bid was selected and each time the project got stuck due to financial or political reason new bids were invited and this happened 3 or 4 times.

He also added that Investment on roads and transport is a "DEAD INVESTMENT".

Countries consider investment on roads and transport as one of the major factors for drawing the attention of investors and is a plus factor for investment and later developments in many fields, but if the government says that investment on roads and transport is a "DEAD INVESTMENT" what would you expect them to do?

Maybe it is indeed a "DEAD INVESTMENT" as the heads of provincial and federal governments and the government officials cannot earn much out of it for their deep pockets and purses and wallets, bank accounts etc....

Sreedharan in Lahore to advise Pak on mass transit rail system


Islamabad, Mar 05: The brains behind the swanky Delhi Metro Rail, E Sreedharan today visited Pakistan on an invite from the government to advise it on plans to build a mass transit rail system in Lahore.

Sreedharan, the Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation, was invited by Suleman Ghani, Chairman Planning and Development of Pakistan's Punjab government, for a four-day visit to Lahore to discuss plans and advise on building a mass rapid transit system in the city, officials here told a news agency.

The Pakistan Foreign Office, however, has not permitted an Indian diplomat from here to go to Lahore to assist Sreedharan during his visit, officials said.

Pakistan planned to build mass transit systems for both Lahore and Karachi to meet increasing rush of the urban transportation.

Sreedharan was expected to be in Lahore till March 8 and would take part in meetings with local officials.
 
^^^^^^^ that is 6 year old news also they will not opt for India at any cost rather be in misery.

If India-pak become friends most of the problems of both countries will be solved. But peace is next to impossible so lets bear it.

BTW, India is building Metro in more then 12 cities and the list will expend with every year.

Sure, India always wanted to become friend of Pakistan on their conditions. We are not fan of staying enemy to India or any other country but question is what is the "trade-off" value. If you can think, Pakistan would want to be friend with India "more" than vice versa but not at a "cost" which is unbearable for us.

Same like your paksat news comes up once in a while every few months, but no proof that it exists and whether it will really be launched some day.

Land acquisition will be Complete in 2010-11 and construction will begin in 2012 in Phase-I Green line Inshallah

Feasibility reports completed but funds are not available Shahbaz Sharif is trying to attract investment from Arabs and Chinese.

The Green Line is expected to cost $2.4 billion dollars US to construct and will extend from Shahdara to Hamza Town. The total length of Green Line is expected to be 27 km, with 11.6 km underground and 15.4 km overhead.There will be in total 12 underground station and 10 overhead stations built.

Let see if the dream comes true..............otherwise these politician didn't left any effort to make the railway a scrap yard.
 
Doesnt Pakistan GDP need to be higher and hence tax revenue to make a succesful metro line?

Punjab delegation to hold investment meet in Dubai

Pakistani state hopes to lure investors

Dubai A huge delegation of top Pakistani businessmen led by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will visit Dubai from next Saturday to the following Monday to lure investors and boost trade relations, Gulf News has learnt.

The highlight of the visit will be an investment conference at Emirates Towers Hotel on Monday. The conference will be attended by potential investors, both Pakistani and expatriate, and officials from the Dubai government, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Dubai Department of Economic Development.

More than 100 businessmen and the Punjab government officials will be among the delegation. The event is being organised by the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT).

During the visit, Punjab Chief Minister Sharif will also hold talks with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on co-operation to develop a metro system in Lahore similar to the Dubai Metro.

Traffic congestion

"Sharif will meet the RTA official and visit the Dubai Metro as he is interested in having a similar metro system in Lahore, which is facing acute traffic congestion," a diplomat at the Pakistan Embassy told Gulf News.

Apart from the investment conference, the businessmen are also expected to sign some business deals and memoranda of understanding with various business groups in Dubai.

"The purpose of the visit is not only to attract investement, but also to improve trade ties and raise exports from Punjab to the UAE," he said.

Pakistan's Punjab province is becoming a progressively more significant player on Asia's economic map. In 2010, the province with 92 million people is expected to exceed Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh in terms of the value of its gross provincial product.

"Punjab believes in free trade where there are no restrictions on exports or imports. We also welcome foreign direct investments and do not restrict the repatriation of profits and capital," said Sharif in a statement.

He added that Punjab has experienced an average growth rate of about 7.5 per cent since 2003.

As a largely agrarian province which is self-sustaining, Punjab enjoys an abundance of food and livestock output.

Some of the world's biggest crops are found here in rice, cotton, wheat, dairy and meat. It also has various mineral resources and a very large skilled labour force.

Flood aid in focus

More than 2,000 delegates from 52 countries are participating in the 38th India, South Asia, Africa and Middle East (ISAMEE) Forum Pakistan in Dubai to talk about investment projects and flood relief efforts in Pakistan.

About 800 delegates from Pakistan and India will discuss possibilities for initiating goodwill, economic and social welfare projects between the two countries.

The forum is being organised by the Lions Clubs International with the objective of portraying Pakistan's image as a peaceful country.

1.) ^^^ Its all in planning stages nothing going to start in near future.

2.) In pakistan, 27 kms = US $ 2.4 billion for the total length of Green Line 27 km, with 11.6 km underground and 15.4 km overhead.

I smell a scam there, as in India we have build:

Delhi Airport Metro Express

22.7 km = US $ 640.47 million only.

The total length of the line is 22.7 km of which 15.7 km of the route is underground and 7 km is elevated. The trains travel at up to 135 km/h.

(Presently the Delhi Metro network consists of six lines with a total length of 189.63 kilometers (117.83 mi) with 142 stations of which 35 are underground. It has a combination of elevated, at-grade and underground lines + Delhi Airport Metro Express of 22.7 kms.)

Bilour directs early completion of Karachi Circular Railway

Minister for Railways Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour Friday directed Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the concerned ministry officials to expedite work on Karachi Circular Railway project.

In a meeting with a six-member JICA delegation of technical experts headed by Ken Kato, the railways minister said delay in project has raised serious concerns among the public facing acute transport problems.

The Japanese delegation expressed satisfaction over performance of the Karachi Urban Transport Corporation that has completed maximum of the task assigned to it regarding the circular railway project.

The delegation informed the minister that a team of technical experts would reach Pakistan in June this year to survey design of the project that would also comprise its geo-technical investigation.

Ken Kato apprised the minister that following the appraisal mission project; Japan would hold detailed discussion on the provision of loan facility and ascertain the time period for the purpose.

The railways minister assured Japanese delegation of all possible cooperation in execution of the multi-billion project.

Why not China? They have good trains and a good ally of you lot
