Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld explained that the vision of India he depicted in the houses Paris-Bombay-themed fashion show earlier this week was a fantastical idea of India.
That goes without saying. The setting, in Paris Grand Palais, was a decadent banquet of high tea treats and crystal chandeliers.
The clothes too, with their embroidered pearls and matte gold and silver detail, were spectacular in a fairy-tale kind of way.
The Bombay blowout hinted at a kind of fin-depoque lavishness that the luxury-goods industry has grappled with for a few years now. Throughout the economic upheavals of the last three years, high-end fashion houses have sought to balance the escapism that clients often buy into to justify a splurge with a new frugality and changing perceptions of wealth, as captured by the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Mr. Lagerfeld said this collection dedicated to the craftsmen who manufacture for Chanel is a struggle against morosity even with what little remains, Mr. Lagerfeld said after the show. He described India as a country where even the poor have dignity even poor women own three gold bracelets. Heard on the Runway has more
