WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama, in some of his most blunt remarks to date, said on Monday that Osama bin Laden would have escaped if the United States had sought Pakistan's permission ahead of the raid on the al-Qaida leader's compound.

Obama administration officials have previously justified the decision not to involve Islamabad by citing the risk that bin Laden might somehow be tipped off and flee his compound in Abbottabad before the team of Navy SEALs arrived.

Leon Panetta, then the director of the CIA and now defense secretary, said in an interview with TIME magazine shortly after the May 2011 raid that there was a concern that the Pakistanis "might alert the targets."

But in Monday's presidential foreign policy debate against Republican opponent Mitt Romney, Obama presented such risk as a certainty.

"If we had asked Pakistan (for) permission, we would not have gotten him," Obama said.

The bin Laden raid was one of the many issues Obama used to differentiate himself from his opponent.

Romney - during his failed bid for the 2008 Republican nomination - criticized Obama for warning publicly that, if Islamabad didn't act, he would go into Pakistan to get high value targets like bin Laden. Romney suggested such comments were not helpful in building ties.

On Monday, Romney said he also would have ordered the raid.

"We had to go into Pakistan. We had to go in there to get Osama bin Laden. That was the right thing to do," Romney said.

The question of who in Pakistan might have known about bin Laden's whereabouts is still a matter of speculation.

The Pakistani ambassador to the United States at the time of the raid, Husain Haqqani, told a forum in Washington in August that he believed someone somewhere in Pakistan must have known -- a similar sentiment echoed by Panetta.

"I don't have any hard evidence, so I can't say it for a fact. There's nothing that proves the case. But as I said, my personal view is that somebody somewhere probably had that knowledge," Panetta told CBS' "60 Minutes" program in January.

Duh :cheesy:

Every other day there are attacks on Pakistani bases done by insider knowledge.

There is absolutely a very good chance that if USA had told Pakistan about bin Laden's location he would have gotten away.

Hmmm Is it true that the same level of mistrust still exist in High level personals in Pakistan Military establishment.

This is just stating the obvious.

July 22, 2004: 9/11 Commission Report Fails to Mention Possible ISI Connections to 9/11
Despite previous leaks to the media showing the 9/11 Commission was given information showing Pakistani officials were “up to their eyeballs” in collaboration with the Taliban and al-Qaeda before 9/11 (see June 20, 2004) [LOS ANGELES TIMES, 6/14/2004] , and even reports of a document given to the commission claiming the “ISI was fully involved in devising and helping the entire [9/11 plot]” (see July 22, 2004) [UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL, 7/22/2004] , the 9/11 Commission’s Final Report released on this day rarely mentions the ISI at all. The only significant mention is a brief comment that the ISI was the Taliban’s “primary patron.” ISI Director Lt. Gen. Mahmood Ahmed is mentioned only twice, both in the context of post-9/11 diplomacy. Saeed Sheikh is not mentioned at all. The report notes that details of the 9/11 plot were widely known by the Taliban leadership, but fails to consider if the Taliban shared that knowledge or involvement with their “primary patron.” [9/11 COMMISSION, 7/24/2004] Indeed, far from criticizing Pakistan, the commission praises the country for its support in the war on terrorism, and suggests that the US should greatly increase its foreign aid there. watch out another day America will say " i dont know who bin laden is " and u know world will belive it bcoz they are masters but not for these people who knows reality

Actually, Pakistani commission discredited US account of OBL episode and this statement appears to be reciprocal.

Why didn't your government, military, ISPR refute the OBL operation? They found an American helicoper outside the house. They deported the entire OBL family to Saudi Arabia. They arrested the doctor for OBL operation. Yet you are trying to console yourself with these conspiracy theories.

Didn't your Prime Minister say "kisney Osama bin Laden ko VISA diya tha?" referring to your intelligence agency failure?

u know that we have a government which are payed in dollars so why ask again and again

The biggest issue here is not about what level have extremists penetrate the Pakistani military or government...where this blame is being put excessively.
But whether an issue as big as the OBL could have remained a secret and agreeable to all in the current government setup as it is.

Would it be hush hush even if just Pres Zardari was asked? After all, he is as cunning as a fox with a degree in cunning from oxford.Would he not let his main players know of it? would they not let others know of it?

There was simply no way of conducting this raid in a hush without leaking some info(geo would probably have a strip on it before it even happened).
Moreover, even if the top leadership agreed to it in secrecy..
there would always be somebody who would tell somebody that something was up , who would in turn would tell it to somebody that something was happening and that somebody may know somebody who would have secret links to somebody(s) that were in touch with the well wishers of OBL.

u know that we have a government which are payed in dollars so why ask again and again

And you are ok with that? would you not like some action, some accountability?
After all, a conspiracy only succeeds if those that are being conspired against work in its favor.

^ Too many somebody buddy....:D
But got your point.

Look up the thread when this event first happened. I said this from the beginning.

So is your military? Your generals, ISI everything?
If that's the case what makes you think OBL Operation didn't happen, was false etc etc?
Is it possible to pay dollars to your government and de neuclearise Pakistan?
Is it possible to pay dollars to your govt and make them give up Kashmir issue?
Its about the acceptance level in the population.
u know that we have a government which are payed in dollars so why ask again and again
