L&T's PHWR Nuclear Steam Generators

MUMBAI, JULY 3: L&T Heavy Engineering has delivered its first indigenously designed pressurised heavy water reactor for the nuclear plant being developed by Nuclear Power Corporation in Gujarat.

The first of the two nuclear 700 MWe steam generators was delivered at the Kakrapar nuclear plant on June 16 and another generator will be dispatched on Saturday, the company said in a release on Friday.

A nuclear steam generator is one of the most critical safety class one equipment in a nuclear island. It enables heat transfer from heavy water to generate steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity.

Each steam generator weighs about 215 tonnes and made of special low alloy quenched and tempered steel with nickel-iron-chromium alloy tubes and stainless steel internals.

MV Kotwal, President (Heavy Engineering), Larsen & Toubro said the completion of the steam generator is a major milestone towards ‘Make in India’ vision of the government.

The 3D multi-phase thermal hydraulic analysis and safety analysis including accidental conditions were designed in-house by L&T. The nickel-iron-chromium alloy U-Tubes were manufactured as a joint effort with Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad.

L&T Special Steel and Heavy Forgings, a 65000 sq. meter integrated facility at Hazira, will supply forgings for future nuclear power plant projects. LTSSHF is a joint venture between L&T and NPCIL.

L&T shares were up 0.60 per cent at Rs.1,808 on the BSE on Friday.

Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM)

control-rod-drive-mechanism-crdm.jpg

Controlling nuclear reactions is a matter of ensuring that reactor control rods assume their correct position at precisely the right time. A control rod drive mechanism is designed to insert, withdraw or maintain the position of these control rods from which neutron absorbers are suspended.

L&T has expertise in design and manufacturing of CRDMs. We have supplied 100s of CRDMs so far for nuclear utilities across the nation.

Fuel Transfer Arm & Tool Delivery System

Fuel handling machines or fuel transfer arm transfers handle the fresh as well as irradiated core subassemblies between core, internal storage locations and in-vessel transfer pot.

We have manufactured and installed Fuelling Machine carriage columns, Fuel Transfer arm for nuclear utilities.

Heat Exchanger

Steam generators are heat exchangers used to convert water into steam from heat produced in a nuclear reactor core. The coolant is pumped, at high pressure to prevent boiling, from the reactor coolant pump, through the nuclear reactor core, and through the tube side of the steam generators before returning to the pump.

L&T Heavy Engineering has expertise in manufacturing steam generators and various types of heat exchangers (Bleed Condenser, Bleed Cooler, Stand-by Cooler, Moderator Heat Exchanger, etc.) for various nuclear power plants.

We have a proven track record of manufacturing Steam Generators for the major nuclear utilities across the nation.

Critical Sodium to Water heat transfer steam generators are manufactured in Dust Free Enclosures, using high end technology innovation.

Heavy Water Production Equipment

Heavy water is used as a coolant and moderator in CANDU type reactors.

L&T specialises in manufacturing different types of heavy water Distillation Columns and Trays.

Plasma Reactor & Research Reactor

plasma-reactor-research-reactor.jpg

L&T has manufactured Tokamak Reactor Vessel for the fusion reactor ADITYA, the first indigenously designed and built Tokamak of India.

We are actively involved in the fabrication of various components for research reactors like Deck Plate, Fueling Machine, Carriage and Trolley, Steam Generator Test Facility, etc.

We have supplied equipment and services to all indigenous Nuclear Power Plants and Research & Allied Projects since 1967.

Reactor End Shields

reactor-end-shield.jpg

Reactor Head (Roof Slab) for PFBR Reactors
Reactor Heads or End-Shields are used to prevent the direct radiation field that comes from the reactor’s core region. Heavy water is circulated within End-Shield system to remove the heat generated by the radiation

L&T has manufactured and delivered more than 30 reactor heads to cater the need of Indian Nuclear Power programme.

The Roof Slab is installed as the head on the reactor main vessel to mount the reactivity control devices in PFBR design. Manufacturing of Roof Slab involves Stainless Steel Fabrication with flatness requirement of ± 12mm in ~13 meter diameter. L&T is the only organisation in India to manufacture Roof Slabs.

Reactor Vessels

reactor-vessels.jpg

Nuclear reactor vessels contain core internals and coolant. They are designed to withstand high temperature and high pressure.

Reactor Vessel (Calandria) for PHWR (Candu) Reactors
Calandria is reactor core vessel of CANDU type reactors, made from Stainless Steel, contains heavy water, a moderator used to moderate neutrons to achieve nuclear fission. The pressure tubes inside calandria contains heavy water as coolant which carries the heat from the reactor core.

L&T has a track record of manufacturing the Calandria since, 1969 (RAPP-II). The manufacturing of reactors more than 10m diameter involves precision fabrication with stringent tolerances.

Reactor Vessel for Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR)
L&T delivered the main vessel and safety vessel with highest accuracy level (i.e. within ±12mm for ~13 meter diameter vessels), manufactured from Stainless Steel at Kalpakkam for India’s First commercial Fast Breeder Reactor on schedule.

The main vessel of reactor assembly houses hot and cold sodium pools separated by an inner vessel. To contain the sodium in the unlikely event of leak in the main vessel, a Safety Vessel is provided surrounding the main vessel.

Spent Fuel Handling Equipment

Earlier this year - India started work on fabricating a Light Water Reactor (LWR) of 900 MWe (megawatt electric) for electricity generation.

The design builds on the indigenously developed small-sized LWR developed over the past eight years, a compact version of which was deployed aboard the INS Arihant — the first Indian nuclear-powered submarine.

Work begins on India’s first Light Water Reactor after smaller version | The Indian Express

this reactor will take years to mature, but things are changing rapidly as world are open to offer us technology which was earlier prohibited to us. I am waiting for the day when we will be exporting these reactors.

L&T damm rocking company...i have heard the it's CEO haven't took a single leave in his whole career

I think we can start its construction by 2020 - we would have started it if the previous government would have been serious on the issue - from 2005 onwards, the PM turned his attention towards signing a nuclear deal, making India one of the top three global markets for nuclear power companies in the US and Europe rather than a competitor of companies based in these locations.

but we are lagging behind other countries by a wide margin with whom we could have compete with in this arena.
countries like south korea and china already exporting 1400 mw and upwards reactors to other countries. By the time we would be able to master 900 mw reactor, they would be building reactors of 2000 mw.

I wish we can do better during this current regime.

China gained a lot through partnering with Westinghouse and Areva in the development of CAP1000, CAP1400 & CNP-1000 which is not the case with India until the NSG wavier was pursued - South Korea's APR-1400 is pretty impressive though.

Indian firms like Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Walchandnagar Industries and Godrej and Boyce have a potentially active role in the nuclear sector. Now that the Nuclear liability issue has been sorted out I am sure they'll absorb and gain the required expertise as subcontractors to come up with their own design - Recent deals struck by L&T with reference to Westinghouse's AP1000 and Areva's ERP nuclear reactors are going to be crucial.

On the sidelines we have made significant progress on Advance Heavy Water Reactors - a next-generation nuclear reactor that burns thorium in its fuel core. Construction of a 300MW prototype will be commence in 2016. AHWR has been one of the few reactors in the world that have already strived to meet the requirements of innovative next-generation nuclear reactors as has been spelt out in several international forums.

NPCIL plans to expand the Tarapur Atomic Power Station with two such new reactors (AHWR's), which will have a capacity of about 1,400 MW.

The more advanced reactors not based on how much power they producing, but how much efficient they are in producing per MW.

BTW, check FBR and AHWR, they are atleast a generation ahead of current so called Chinese and SK reactors. And dont forget India directly jumped the gun for fusion reactors, by participating in ITER.
