TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has arrived in Tehran on a visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

The Kuwaiti ruler is heading a high-ranking delegation on an official visit to Tehran to hold talks with senior Iranian authorities.

President Hassan Rouhani officially welcomed Sheikh al-Sabah at a ceremony in Tehran’s Sa’adabad Palace on Sunday.

The Emir’s trip to the Islamic Republic is his first since he became the ruler of Kuwait in 2006.

He is the second Arab ruler in the six-member Persian Gulf Cooperation Council to travel to Iran this year. The first was Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al-Said of Oman.

Kuwaiti ministers for foreign affairs, finance, oil and trade accompany the emir during the two-day visit.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait Alireza Enayati had said Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei will receive the Kuwaiti ruler during Sheikh al-Sabah’s trip to Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Friday had said the Emir’s visit would open a new chapter in relations between the two countries.

The trip would be a milestone in bilateral ties, Zarif said in a Friday meeting with Kuwait's Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah.

He underscored that there is neither reason for dispute, nor obstacle in the way of promoting good and brotherly relations between neighboring and Muslim countries in the region.
