Kraison sets 10-year target to make Royal Thai Navy best in Asean

Navy commander Adm Kraison Chansuwanit vowed to transform the Royal Thai Navy into one of Asean's leading military forces during his first day in office yesterday, saying it will take him 10 years to achieve his aim.

Adm Kraison succeeded Adm Narong Pipathanasai, who was appointed education minister following his retirement on Tuesday. Adm Kraisorn also pledged to install an effective managerial system in the navy and ensure the military unit maintains the high standards set by Adm Narong.

His predecessor personally encouraged the improvements, said Adm Kraisorn.
Asked for his views on the navy's roles in politics, Adm Kraison said the force is a state agency and must follow policies set by the government.
It is a vital part of the state mechanism which maintains peace and order in the country, he added.

The new navy chief is among senior military officers to join the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).The NCPO will work alongside Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha's government.

Air force chief ACM Trithot Sonchaeng, also vowed to make the Royal Thai Air Force one of Asean's leading military powers during his inauguration ceremony at the Royal Thai Air Force Academy Wednesday. He said he supported his predecessor ACM Prajin Juntong in his new role as the transport minister.

ACM Prajin is also a deputy chief of the NCPO. The new air force chief said he was ready to support the politics of Gen Prayut and the NCPO. ACM Prajin meanwhile praised the abilities of his successor. He said he believed in ACM Trithot's capability and was confident the new chief would be able to further develop the air force.

The Royal Thai Navy is centered on a surface-oriented matrix. It is centered on the Knox Class frigate, the Type 025 and Type 053 Frigates. In support are smaller corvettes. They have a very modest "fleet". Their weakness is their relatively non-existent anti-submarine warfare capability, rendering them susceptible to submarine threats. Their light carrier rarely ventures out to port, as it would be a target for most hostile navies, given its lack of defensive platforms.

I would recommend the Thai Navy acquire submarines, and diversify its anti-submarine capabilities. I would say that Singapore carries a more qualitative punch. And I would also say that Indonesia, by far, is the largest naval force in Southeast Asia.

The Thai Navy is not the only well fed koi in that pond. Do not forget the Indonesian Navy, the Singaporean Navy and to an extent, the Malaysian and Vietnamese Navies.

I'm glad the Admiral Said so.
However, if someone ask me to bet money on and see changes 5 years later. I would bet on his failure to achieve what he said.
If you ask me why, I don't know why. I just feel it. I mean will be surprise and glad if I'm wrong.

Subs has been asked by navies many times and all government in the past had refused. I don't know why. I hope Military rule could buy subs and anti sub warfare.

Thailand has ability to be Naval power, if wish. We have high enough income/GDP to buy. We have shipyards by Thai company. We have our own shipping companies. We have a lot of engineer/scientists. Only thing we lack is our government's wish.
