Knitting the India-Sri Lanka relationship closer

It's still the same. Modi as the previous government is promoting his federal system into Sri Lanka which will bring nothing but more problems. Why can't India for once be pragmatic and accept the realities in the region? Never forget that Sri Lankan people are some of the only people in the region that don't hate India. Thanks to the idiocy of Indian government, it will make more haters in the region by talking about issues that are sensitive to SL.

With Modi, it is anything but federalism. :D

What seems to be federalism is what our left libtards have been fearing. The states have autonomy to generate business, meet development goals and invite investments in infrastructure projects; BUT they HAVE to. It is not like previous governments where unlimited doleouts were handed down to useless states like West Bengal who would blow it on their local CM/dons.

We are interested in getting commercial and strategic deals with you guys including boosting of tourism, infrastructure and even defence cooperation such as maritime watch. The fisherman raids will stop. Your PM has already stated it as one of the concerns and even we feel that it is wrong on the part of fishermen to raid your waters.

You may not see immediate changes, but you eventually will see positive changes.

Your past distrust comes from local politicians since they were controlled by crafty politicians from TN. This time it is different.

Just give it some time.

If India acted more mature enough. We wouldn't have any reason to go with China. As of now, our own salvation is China.

As a free country, you have all the rights to court anyone for development, investment and betterment of your citizens. It is your right.

But all we say is, don't make it hostile for us.

With Chinese nuke subs, it is just a start. If you give them complete control like Cambodia and Laos are, chances are that they will make your state into a puppet state by keeping Rajapakse type rulers and there will come point when even the local Lankan population won't be able to oppose the Chinese plans.

If that happens heavens forbid, your country will automatically be dragged into any future conflict; however remote.

This is why we are saying this.

Nuclear subs apart, your people are afraid of everything China is doing in SL. Heck India is opposed to the port city project. Anyway Mahinda Rajapaksha is bound to come back to power. Let's wait till then so we can sort things out.

Modi, like other governments, has to bow down to the pressure coming from states like Tamil Nadu which is affecting foreign policy of India and their votes are a reason why a politician can win so Modi has to appeal to them. I don't understand the problems between India and China. It seems that India is paranoid about China for no apparent reason while China has very little regard towards India. To develop the Asian region we need China because China is going to be the world's largest economy and that too with a economic strength that was never seen before in the world so no country including India can ignore it. Even the UK which is the closest ally for US has applied to join Chinese-run institutions including AIIB and it decided to ignore US concerns so that will give you an idea about the strength of Chinese. If Modi is smart, he should reach a settlement with China instead of carrying on a game that he cannot win. This issue with China hurts countries like Sri Lanka too which only seeks to reap economic benefits and not willing to participate in power grabbing.

I think you guys still have to understand how Modi works. TN leaders like Vaiko whose party supports Modi did huge drama on SL issue when your past President came to India. Even threatened with all possible ways but Modi is a tough guy and he welcomed MRP. So its totally different ball game now.As I said , next 2-3 years gonna be historical for India and its neighbors as we have a proactive govt not a reactive one.

Question of setting with China is all we want but Chinese guys are dilly dallying and buying time to strengthen its bargaining power. China has some absurd claim on whole AP which has an active Indian democracy and people support . While at the same time they are occupying Aksai Chin. Trust me its in India's interest to settle as that will put Pakistan is somewhat uncomfortable zone also.

Regarding the strength of China, or for the matter any country is in economy and resulting military power / social well being. So today China is strong and UK wants a piece but US has been around so long that it has reached a status quo. The United States has been the world’s biggest economy since 1871, so its not gonna be like you perceive. Right now only 2 economy is powering world growth India and US. US is the most robust among major economy .

We can only wait and watch how this thing unfolds.
