Bomai (Sopore), Feb 22: Amidst curfew in Sopore township, thousands of people Sunday participated in the funeral prayers of one of the two youth killed in army firing at Bomai, Sopore yesterday while five persons were injured in anti-army protests in Baramulla.

Carrying the body of Mohammad Amin Tantray, who along with Javed Ahmad Dar of Muslim Peer, Sopore was killed in firing by 22 Rashtriya Rifles on Saturday evening, thousands of people of Bomai and adjoining villages took to streets amidst pro-freedom, anti-army and anti-India slogans.
The locals had refused to bury the body of Amin yesterday evening unless the troopers involved were awarded punishment. It was only after the intervention of police and civil officials that the locals agreed to offer the Nimaz-e-Jinaza of the deceased.
“After the assurances of impartial Magistrate inquiry by Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Baseer Ahmad Khan, we buried the body of slain youth,” the protestors said.
“If killers were not brought before public we will again come on road to seek justices," they added.
Later, the people again staged anti-army demonstrations and demanded action against the personnel involved in the incident. “It is a cold-blooded murder. The youth were innocent and were passing through the area when they were fired upon by the army men,” said the residents.
“We won't rest till the murderers are punished. They have killed two innocent boys without any reason and justification and should be given stern punishment so that such incidents don’t recur,” said Maroof Ahmad of Bomai.
The protestors were also demanding the removal of 22 RR camp from the area. “If the camp is not removed within five days, we would stage massive demonstrations and paralyze the functioning of the administration. Let them kill us but we won't tolerate them anymore in the area,” said an angry middle aged man, Ghulam Hassan Dar.
Dar is the next door neighbour of the slain youth Mohammd Amin Tantray.
“Our village is fortified; we have four camps of army and paramilitary troopers near our educational institutes. We can't move in the evening and they harass people particularly youth here. They must leave the area,” said a local Ali Mohammed Sofi.
DIG North, Abdul Gani Mir and DC Baramulla Baseer Ahmad Khan, who had earlier visited the area assured the people that those involved in the killings won't be spared.
The authorities had imposed curfew in entire Sopore township to thwart any attempt by people to take out anti-army demonstrations. Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was made in Sopore and outskirt roads.
“We were apprehensive of more protests so we enforced restrictions to prevent more violence,” said a police official, pleading anonymity.
Dozen's of media persons were stopped by police at Sangrama and not let to enter the town.

Anti-army protests in Baramullah

Five persons including a policeman were injured during clashes which broke out after hundreds of people took to streets to protest against the killing of two youth.
Hundreds of people took to the streets in Baramulla town on Sunday to protest against what they term as the brutal killing of two innocent youth by army personnel in Bomai, Sopore. The demonstrations started in the old town area where from the protestors, amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, marched toward civil lines.
