Indian Communist Party condemns killing of 2 protesters in India-controlled Kashmir
SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The lone legislator and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary in India-controlled Kashmir, Mohammed Yosuf Tarigami, Tuesday condemned the killing of two young protesters in police firing and said such incidents go against the peace building efforts in the region.
"The continuous uncertainty prevailing in the region in the aftermath of Shopian incident, followed by the violence and civilian casualties, has cast dark shadows on the state. The government should talk to the people rather than worsen the situation through harsh measures," Tarigami said.
The Communist leader also expressed concern over the alleged custodial disappearance of a 15-year old boy, Basharat Ahmad Bhat,in Larkipora village 70 kilometers south of Srinagar, and urged the government to trace the whereabouts of the missing youth, besides punishing the guilty involved into the incident.
"If any person in uniform indulges in traumatizing the people, the government should not make any compromise in punishing him," Taragami said.
Family members of Bhat said he was summoned by Indian army troopers stationed in the village on Sunday, from where he has not returned back.
"A local village elder accompanied him to the camp Sunday morning. When he did not turn back until late, we went to the camp and they told us he has been already released," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a family relative.
The villagers have been demonstrating for the past two days seeking the whereabouts of Bhat.
In India-controlled Kashmir region around 10,000 people have disappeared in the custody of police and Indian army troopers since 1990, said the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, an organization fighting for whereabouts of persons missing in the region.
Meanwhile, in the fresh spate of violence, six people were injured Tuesday after police fired tire smoke shells and bullets to quell the youth protesting the killing of two civilians in Baramulla, 52 kilometers northwest of Srinagar.
On Monday two people were killed and 10 others were injured in the police firing in the town. The locals were protesting against the alleged sexual harassment of a woman by a police official.
In the Srinagar city also a youth was injured Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a tear smoke shell fired by police, hospital authorities said.
