Indian Communist Party condemns killing of 2 protesters in India-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The lone legislator and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary in India-controlled Kashmir, Mohammed Yosuf Tarigami, Tuesday condemned the killing of two young protesters in police firing and said such incidents go against the peace building efforts in the region.

"The continuous uncertainty prevailing in the region in the aftermath of Shopian incident, followed by the violence and civilian casualties, has cast dark shadows on the state. The government should talk to the people rather than worsen the situation through harsh measures," Tarigami said.

The Communist leader also expressed concern over the alleged custodial disappearance of a 15-year old boy, Basharat Ahmad Bhat,in Larkipora village 70 kilometers south of Srinagar, and urged the government to trace the whereabouts of the missing youth, besides punishing the guilty involved into the incident.

"If any person in uniform indulges in traumatizing the people, the government should not make any compromise in punishing him," Taragami said.

Family members of Bhat said he was summoned by Indian army troopers stationed in the village on Sunday, from where he has not returned back.

"A local village elder accompanied him to the camp Sunday morning. When he did not turn back until late, we went to the camp and they told us he has been already released," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a family relative.

The villagers have been demonstrating for the past two days seeking the whereabouts of Bhat.

In India-controlled Kashmir region around 10,000 people have disappeared in the custody of police and Indian army troopers since 1990, said the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, an organization fighting for whereabouts of persons missing in the region.

Meanwhile, in the fresh spate of violence, six people were injured Tuesday after police fired tire smoke shells and bullets to quell the youth protesting the killing of two civilians in Baramulla, 52 kilometers northwest of Srinagar.

On Monday two people were killed and 10 others were injured in the police firing in the town. The locals were protesting against the alleged sexual harassment of a woman by a police official.

In the Srinagar city also a youth was injured Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a tear smoke shell fired by police, hospital authorities said.

Death toll in police firing rises to 4 in India-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, July 1(Xinhua) -- The death toll in Baramulla police firing in India-controlled Kashmir rose to four Wednesday as another youth who was critically injured on Monday died, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Amir Rashid Mir.

Mir was critically injured during the police firing on civilian protesters in Baramulla, 52 kilometers northwest of Srinagar, on Monday and succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday morning at a Srinagar hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

People Wednesday morning again took to streets after Mir's body reached the town. Thousands of the people participated in the funeral procession of Mir, raising anti-Indian slogans.

On Tuesday evening, police firing on protesters in the town left a youth dead and several others injured.

The demonstrations broke out Monday following an allegation of sexual harassment of a woman at the hands of a police official, an accusation denied by the police.

Officials had imposed curfew in the district to prevent the demonstrations but failed to keep the protesters at bay.

"Our sons are getting killed for the past three days and there is no one to question the police atrocity. Is this the zero tolerance that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been talking about? Among the deceased none was a militant. They were unarmed civilians," said Mohammed Rafiq, an aged person In Baramulla.

The Muslim dominated areas in the region, including Srinagar city, are observing a shutdown for the second consecutive day in response to the three-day shutdown call given by hardline separatist alliance headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Anti-India demonstrations have been going on in the region since May 30 following rape and murder of two women aged 17 and 22years in Shopian town, 50 kilometers south of Srinagar. Locals suspect the involvement of troopers in the rape and killing of the duo.

When it will be election time than all indian media will propagate that some criminals are not allowing Kashmiris to participate.
It is 60 years of raping and killing of indian minorities by state, but west and UN is quite.
Shame on west and UN for sitting quite.
This reminds me of Mukhtar Mai, who was raped by her neighbors and the President of Pakistan has to go on world tour to issue explanation.
Story of Mukhtar mai was printed in 10 languages and she was hosted by many western states.
I bet if she would have went to US embassy for visa without getting raped, she would not have allowed to enter the compound but US gave her the top rewards.
Can US and Europe give equal importance to those poor of Kashmir, who are being raped from decades by their own millitary and their families are being shoot if they grieve.
