The Kharjees first appeared in the days of Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and their ideas gained momentum during the caliphate of Hazrat Usman (r.a) until it emerged as an organized group during the caliphate of Hazrat Ali (r.a). Kharjees commited acts of terrorism and carried out atrocities in the name of Islam. Due to their extreme and specious religious arguments, they would declare it permissible to shed the blood of Muslim.
Who is “Kharji ”?- Islamic classical scholars have given definitions of this word, but for particular reason I am quoting Ibn e Tamiyya:
“ Since they were armed and inclined to fight, their opposition to the community manifested when they started killing the people. However, as for today, most people ( due to their religious grab and appearance) do not know of them…. And their ‘passing through the religion’ is their leaving it because of their having declared lawful the blood and wealth of the Muslims.”(Al- Nubuwwat, p-222)
Allah says in Holy Quran(3:7)
“….So, those who have deviation in their hearts follow only its figurative verses….”
Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) said : “They are Kharjees” (Tafseer Ibn e Kaseer, 1:347)
Above stated Verse of Quran and its interpretation by Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) also gives an impression of the presence of Kharjees at the time of Prophet, yes ! the legacy of the Kharjees began during the time, with disrespect of Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H).
“The first of them to appear was during the time of the messenger of God (P.B.U.H), and he was a man who accused the Prophet (P.B.U.H) of injustice as he apportioned the war booty at Ja’rana. He said, ‘O Muhammad! Be just, for I don’t think you are acting fairly’. So the messenger of God (P.B.U.H) replied, ‘Woe to you! Who will be just if I am not just?’(Imam Ajurri,Kitab al-sharia)(Sahi Bukhari,5:2281). Imam Asqalani reported he was Zul khuwaysira Tamimi, his real name was Hurqus bin Zuhayr and he was the founder of Kharjees.
Sometimes crooked and short sighted people emerge in society with compound ignorance concerning the wisdom and vision of the religion. They strictly observe the outward religious acts, which in turn instill them with the conceited belief that they are staunch Muslims and true embodiments of Islam. They feel themselves near to God and consider all others either disbelievers or disobedient. They believe it’s their right to force others and they forget Allah’s words,
‘Invite to the path of your Lord with Wisdom and goodly invitation’
‘There is no compulsion in the religion’
Beliefs and Signs of Kharjees
1. Ibn e Taymiyya: “As the Prophet (P.B.U.H) described them, they would ‘kill the people of Islam and leave idolaters’. (Ibn Taymiyya, Majmua al fatawa, 7:481)
2. Kharji terrorists will appear extremists in religious matters as Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:
“There shall be a folk that comes from my Umma and they will recite the Quran, your recitation will not be comparable to theirs, or your prayers or fasting to theirs. They will recite the Quran and believe it supports them but (in reality) it is against them. Their prayers will not go past their throats. They will exit from religion just as an arrow exits from a hunted game”(Sahih Muslim, 2:748) “They will have thick, unkempt beards”(Sahi Bukhari,4:1581)
“They will wear their lower garments high upon their legs” (Ibid)
3. The slogans if the Kharjees will seem true and appealing to the common man. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:
“They will speak the words of the best of people.”(Sahih Bukhari, 6:2539)
Hazrat Ali(r.a) said about their slogans:
“A word of truth by which falsehood is intended”
4. Kharjees will brainwash young people and use them for terrorist activities. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:
“At the end of time there shall appear a folk, young in age and foolish…..”(Sahi Bukhari, 6:2539) “They will be young in age” (Sahi Bukhari,6:2539)
“They will be brainwashed”(Ibid)
5. Kharjees will appear from the east. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:
“A people shall come from the east…..”(Sahi Bukhari, 6:2748)
=> During the reign of Hazrat Ali (r.a) the first faction of the Kharjees came from Najd and Harura, east of Mecca and Medina. Geographically, Pakistan is also situated east of the sacred sanctuaries.
6. Kharjees will continue to appear until the emergence of the Anti-Christ as Prophet (P.B.U.H) informed us:
“….They shall continue to appear until the last of them appears with the Anti-Christ…”(Musnad Ahmad bin hanbal,7:119)
“Every time a generation of them appears it will be cut down… this will occur over twenty times…until the Anti-Christ appears in their last remnant.”(Sunan Ibn maaja, 1:61)
7. They will take the verses revealed about the disbelievers and apply them to the believers. (Sahi Bukhari. 6:2539)
8. They will shed blood that is inviolable. (Sahi Muslim, 2:748)
9. They will block roads, shed blood without any authorization for God, and they will declare lawful the blood of the non Muslim citizens.(Al Mustadrak.2:166)
10. They will declare that the one who commits a major sin is disbeliever and will declare lawful their blood and wealth.
11. They will seize a particular area and make it a centre of terrorist activity.
12. They will reject negotiation with the people.
HOW TO DEAL WITH KHARJEES…?
Messenger of God (P.B.U.H) said:
“Kill them wherever you find them” (Sahi Bukhari, 2:746)
Hazrat Ali was the first to fight against Kharjees and is reported to have said:
“If they are quiet we will overwhelm them, and if they speak we will talk to them with logic, and if they rebel against us we will fight them” (Tarikh al Kamil, 3:212-213)
