Dhaka, Dec 19 (UNB) – Accusing Awami League (AL) of killing around 40,000 freedom fighters during its 1971-1975 rule, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday said the nation will one day put the ruling party on trial for the murders.

“They (AL) speak about trial. This party killed some 40,000 freedom fighters…they should be tried…they also killed Biswajit, freedom fighter Siraj Shikder and many more freedom fighters. They’ll be made accountable for the murders and be tried one day,” she warned.

The BNP chief was addressing a reception accorded to freedom fighters by BNP at Mohanagar Natyamanch, marking the Victor Day.

Khaleda slated the ruling party men for what she said their autocratic attitude, saying it seems that the country is the paternal property of Awami League. “The freedom fighters liberated this country through a war…it can’t be the paternal property of any party.”

The former premier said the 18-party has lunched a movement against this killer, oppressor, and autocrat government demanding restoration of the caretaker government. “The polls must be held under a non-party caretaker government. No election will be held under Awami League and it won’t be allowed,” she reiterated.

Khaleda said the 18-parrty will continue its movement until a real government of people is established ousting the incumbent fascist regime.

She alleged that the government is arresting opposition leaders and activists and filing false cases against them while it releasing killers and top terrors from prisons. “The more the government will arrest the opposition activists, the more the number of protesters will increase…there’ll be no minus from BNP now, as people will join it deserting the ruling party.”

Khaleda also alleged that a deep-rooted conspiracy is on to change the country’s map. “Why our Bangladeshi bothers are being killed regularly along the border. Why Felani’s body was hung on the barbed wire. The government has no answer as it’s subservient to its foreign master but you (freedom fighters) know the answer,” Khaleda said.

The BNP chairperson said her party has no foreign master but many foreign friends. “Awami League thinks that its foreign masters will install it in power again, but people won’t let it happen.”

This country will be run as per the will of its people, not at the behest of any master, she said adding, “We want good relations with all but it’ll have to be based on equity and mutual respect. We won’t bow our head down to any one, tolerate dominance of any country and won’t flatter anybody.”

She urged the freedom fighters to wage another movement together with the new generation to save the country, take it to prosperity and stand as a nation raising the head high.

Mentioning that the present regime is surrounded by thieves, Khaleda said all the advisers to the Prime Minister, her cabinet colleagues, her relatives and party MPs are thieves. “Country’s development is not possible by these thieves.”

She alleged that the names of two Abuls -- former communications minister Syed Abul Hossain and former state minister for foreign affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury — were dropped from the Anti Corruption Commission’s probe report apprehending that it may lead to the revelation of the names of bigwig involved in Padma Bridge graft. Why the names of two Abuls were dropped?” she questioned.

Holding Awami league responsible for the killing of Biswajit in Old Dhaka during a blockaded programme sponsored by 8-party alliance, Khaleda accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of lying about the gruesome murder.

Recalling that her party-led previous government had constituted the Liberation Affairs Ministry, Khaleda said if BNP is voted to power it will raise the allowance for freedom fighters further and give the charge of the ministry to a dedicated freedom fighter for the development and welfare of the freedom fighters.

Several thousand freedom fighters along with BNP leaders and activists attended the function, presided over by BNP vice chairman Maj (retd) Shahjahan Omar.

Khaleda reached the venue around 3:15pm and accorded reception to the freedom fighters. She also presented them white T-shirts and red-green caps.

Dhaka, Dec 19: India has decided never to back those who had opposed Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971, its Acting High Commissioner in Dhaka said on Wednesday. Sandeep Chakraborty also said at a discussion that this position was taken at the highest level of his country. "India will never back those who were against Bangladesh's independence. What I am informing you is not only my word but also the statements of the Indian President and the Prime Minister.”
India had stood by Bangladesh during the nation’s War of Independence and took in over 10 million refugees from Bangladesh, trained freedom fighters and later joined the war against Pakistan.
As a mark of gratitude, in July last year, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was conferred the ‘Bangladesh Freedom Honour’ for her unparalleled support and contribution to help Bangladesh emerge on the world map.
Her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi, also President of India’s ruling Congress party, received the award posthumously. Indira Gandhi was the first of the foreign friends to be conferred the highest state honour.
Bangladesh has been regularly honouring its foreign friends who contributed to the freedom struggle since the Awami League-led coalition government assumed office.
In the second phase, 83 persons were honoured on March 27 this year and another 61 were honoured in the third phase on Oct 20. Bangladesh honoured 60 persons and two institutions on Dec 15 this year, the month of victory, for their contribution to independence.
The latest league of foreign friends awarded included renowned Indians like communist leader Ila Mitra, her husband Ramendra Mitra, Bengali music legend Salil Chowdhury, singers Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Manna Dey, acclaimed filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, writer Sunil Gangopadhyay and famous painter Maqbool Fida Husain.
The stand-in envoy said Bangladesh government’s initiative to honour members of the Indian armed forces who had taken part in Bangladesh’s Liberation War was a ‘great step’ and hoped the amiable Indo-Bangla relationship would continue to flourish.
Chakraborty said India would assist Bangladesh in its efforts to emerge as a developed country.

You are right... one of the close relative of Mirza Fakhrul told me the same last month. It is not like BNP is in bed with Jamaat but Jamaat has certain amount of vote bank only that is the reason BNP is patronizing this party. There is other concern is that if BNP is part away from Jamaat then Awamileague may take it in the party.

All these politics is very dirty in nature. Here people even don't bother to sell their mother and sister to get into the power. Only the field level activists are used as guinea pig and these brain washed people even give their life for them. It is pathetic.

For example all these Jamaat leaders are encouraging the activists to fight, die or accept torture and long term imprisonment but how many of these leader's children are on the field for protesting??? Answer is none. This speaks the volume.

Their kids dont need to be involved in street level politics, they take the andalib rahman route. Street level supporters are the muscles of a party, all parties need fanatics like that to run a party in Bangladesh. I'm fully aware of BD being a police state. But thanks for the reminder anyway. On a related note, BNP and JI walas were being made the worst kind of donkey/fool by keeping them busy on playing by rules whereas AWAMY-COMMIES were allowed to break all the rules that started with the killings of Logy-Baita but foolish BNP/JI walas didn't buy their protection, couldn't realize their upcoming demise even until the end. The core proponent of such fall was Commie's favoring RAWAMYS over BNP walas IMO.
