Anyone who wishes to join as a student in my department should learn one or more Dravidian languages, and Tamil is a must". This was the precondition set by professor Janert, head of the department of Indology and Tamil studies at Cologne University, Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. Ulrike Niklas, a young German student, enthusiastically accepted the challenge and graduated in Indology and Tamil Studies from the department. At that time Ulrike didn't know that her small attempt would forge a strong cultural, social and literary " bridge between Germany and Tamil Nadu in Cologne.

Today Ulrike, 63, heads the Institute of South Asian and South East Asian studies (with emphasis on Tamil and Indonesian languages) at Cologne University — the sole full-fledged Tamil department in the European Union. Having produced hundreds of European Tamil graduates in the past 20 years, the department has a library that boasts of a collection of more than 40,000 Tamil books - the largest outside Tamil Nadu. The department recently hosted an international conference on Periyar and self-respect movement in Tamil Nadu, drawing delegates from all over the world.

Ulrike who has played an instrumental role in the development of Tamil studies in Germany, says her quest for Tamil literature grew manifold after she graduated from Cologne.

A visit to Thanjavur in 1981 inspired her to enroll in a four-week course on introduction to Tamil culture at the newly-inaugurated Tamil University. She came back to pursue an 18-month programme on an Indo-German joint scholarship.

Thereafter, there was no looking back for the young lady. Deeply absorbed in Tamil classics like Tolkappiyam and Sangam literature, Ulrike on weekends, would cycle to villages around Thanjavur to meet people and learn more about Tamil culture. To pick up the spoken language, she would watch movies of Sivaji Ganesan.

Ulrike did her PhD on the Tamil classic 'Muttollayiram' at Cologne University. After two years of study at Madurai Kamaraj University she passed the habilitation in Germany — with a collection of research works she had undertaken on Tamil literary theory.

She taught Tamil at the National University of Singapore for seven years before being called to Cologne in 2006 to head its department of Indology and Tamil studies. The department was later renamed as the Institute of South-Asian and South-East-Asian Studies in 2012.

It was Ulrike who introduced the study of the Dravidian movement and Periyar's teachings in the department's curriculum. She believes Periyar's ideologies are universal and have relevance everywhere. Over the past decade, she has been bringing her students to Puducherry every year to expose them to Tamil language and culture.
"It was a privilege when in 2010, then chief minister M Karunanidhi's office called me to be a special invitee delegate at the Chemmozhi conference held at Coimbatore," she says. The library at her department has more than 40,000 Tamil books, many being first editions. "From 1960s to 1980s, entire libraries of late Tamil pandits were purchased for our institute. The library was constantly enhanced with new collections until 2009. We now invest more in IT, audio and camera gadgets with which we create materials for a modern language and culture teaching course," she says. Ulrike, however, rues that space constraint doesn't allow them to exhibit the books in a systemic manner.
Her main worry now is to identify a worthy successor, to carry on the tradition after her. What irks her more is the university's plan to shut down the cash-starved institute if there isn't enough support from outside. If that happens, it would be a big blow not only to Ulrike but to the entire Tamil speaking world.

The damn Hind-ian gov will not even contribute one Rs to keep this institute alive while it establishes Hindi professorships around the word.

Tamils arew collecting money from individuals to establish a Tamil Chair in Harvard Univ while Indian gov did not give one Rs to it.

For every Rs. 100 that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madya Pradesh pays in taxes to India, they get back from India (in the form of central projects, joint state-centre projects, grants, etc.) Rs. 179, Rs. 96 and Rs. 75. In contrast, for every Rs. 100 that Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka pays in taxes to India, they get back from India Rs. 25, Rs. 40 and Rs. 47, respectively.

Time for Dravida.

. .
Kerala should be absolutely devoid of Central Govt. funds until it improves its treatment of religious minorities ( Hindus ) and dismantales the ISIS operations which have led to thousands of Indians (Muslims ) serving the ISIS in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kerala is currently a state sponsor of terrorism.

Tamil Nadu is well funded,
Karnataka is well funded

In UP, Bihar the Hindi language is being replaced by english anyways

.
This is interesting because recently there are reports that many Indian languages would get extinct in near future if left with negligence.

the present Tamilnadu state govt is an Indian puppet and Tamils anger/frustration with both the state and centre have reached its breaking point.

Apart from other on going issues. The recent issue is the controversy of placing the so called Hindu holy book at ex Indian presidents memorial. Tamils view this act as a subtle attempt to push Sanskrit/Hinduism/Hindutva into Tamilnadu. Everyone knows that Tamil Tirukural (not the Gita) was 1 one the 3 secular books that influenced Kalam.

Should a war break out Tamils support will be for China they had enough of North Indian and Hindutva hegemony . Indian can be in denial and dream that all is well in Tamilnadu.

Nope. Tamil support won't be for China.
Take it from me, I've lived in Tamil Nadu for a while. I've seen how patriotic these guys can be.

Time has changed , much water has flowed under the bridge since you left your beloved mother land for greener pasture. Tell us why should Tamils be patriotic (slaves) to India ?

When India shaft down its Hindi on Tamils, no protection for Tamil fisher men from Lankan navy attacks, no water , no consensus of policies forcefully implemented on Tamils e,g NEET

Tamilnadu water crisis @ Kaveri banks - during the recent Tamil festival

But the majority of the TamBrahmins and non Tamils living is Tamilnadu and some Amma's Dravidian clowns will support India for their survival

Rahul Gandhi hits out at NDA government, says there is crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, anger in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu

I am living in TN and i think i am eligible to reply to your questions.

1. Every Tamil will die for India when there is a threat to India.
2. Yes We are Mad at both the center and state governments because they are not doing any welfare to the people as such but we never hate our motherland India.

If you want a separate TN lets start with Eelam first :P

You are a non Tamil living in TN, hence that statement is to create an artificial feel good factor for your Indian countrymen.

If Tamils choose to die for India, good for them, Tamilnadu dont need Indian slaves.

With 70 million Tamils, Tamilnadu has better option than Eelam (2m), furthermore historical Sinhala and Tamil are actually brothers, similar to Keralites and Tamils, they will fight and reconcile. They share many common cultural/political similarities that bind them. This not the case with Tamils and Hindis / Indians. Together with China, Sinhalas and Eelam Tamil will whack India.

TN independence will be a natural outcome to fight Hindi hegemony, what TN needs is a leader of VP caliber, and support from major powers - Pakistan/China. FYI, Pakistan owes TN an unfulfilled favour

Oh the irony, he questions my patriotism but he doesn't show his own country's flag under his avatar.
You know what flag I'm talking about. It's the same color as those pastures you were talking about.
But a false flagger wouldn't understand any of that.

a German missionary who changed the lives of downtrodden Tamils

Ziegenbalg arrived at Tranquebar - Tamilnadu, in 1706 brought remarkable changes in the lives of Tamils. Ziegenbalg and his colleague Heinrich Plutschau, actively contributed to the field of modern education.

Ziegenbalg's knowledge of Tamil built a literary bridge between Tamilnadu and Germany.

He translated the Old Testament and other Western literature into Tamil. This paved way for exchange of thoughts on Tamil religious customs and socio-cultural practices

He introduce a Tamil printing press in Tranquebar in 1712, served the poor with the setting of the first school for girls in 1710.

Fake Indians in this thread never fail to amuse. If you guys are so ashamed of your real flags why did you left in the first place.
