Foreign student assaulted
It is a matter of pride when foreign students come to our country for higher education. But if a girl student is assaulted here, where does our national pride stand? It is indeed shameful that an Indian girl studying at the private Shaheed Mansur Ali Medical College in Uttara, returned to her country after being assaulted.
Yesterday's Prothom Alo reported, this Kashmiri Indian girl was studying in first year MBBS. On 4 March a senior student of the same college abducted her. The girl later returned to the college and complained to the authorities. She had to be admitted to the hospital's medial department after her assault. She then left and went back to her country. This naturally spread fear among the other foreign students studying there. Some of them have informed the authorities that they plan to leave.
This behaviour towards a foreign student has tarnished the country's image. This cannot be repaired, but at least the responsible students must receive exemplary punishment to prevent such happenings in future. The college authorities have formed an inquiry committee and filed a case with the Uttara West police station. We hope the authorities take institutional measures against as well and that action also be taken on the criminal charges against him.
The concerned educational institution is responsible for the safety of its students, more so of its foreign students. The authorities must reassure the foreign students studying there and ease their fear. This can be done by immediately taking action against the accused.
