I have received with great distress the world electronic and print media reports regarding preventing girls to pursue education in some parts of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). If these reports are true they are far from Islamic ideals and teachings.
Depriving 74,000 young women to pursue education, burning and blasting 150 schools is an unjustifiable act.

It can be said without any hesitation that those imposing such ban and prohibition are ignorant of Islamic values and principles even being Muslims. In Islam first revelations from Allah to the Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SAW) was 'Iqra" (to read). Prophet Mohammad even himself has stressed on education umpteen times and made seeking knowledge an obligation on every individual that included both men and women. Preventing anybody be that man or woman from pursuing education is against Islamic teachings and is contrary to basic beliefs.

I have also read reports that these groups have now after persuasion agreed to allow girls to study till fourth standard and not beyond that. That also amounts depriving half of your society a basic and a fundamental right. Women enjoy an equal right to education.

Education is obligatory on both Muslim men and women, even if they have to go to China to seek it," is a popular saying of the Prophet.
I appeal to such groups to withdraw such dictates and commands. They must discontinue practice of burning schools. Girls should be allowed to take full advantage of educational facilities as per their resources and capabilities. Co-education should be stopped. But burning and destroying schools is no solution. It would be helpful to open separate schools with equal facilities for girls and boys where they can purse their academic pursuits separately as per their potential.

Every society needs enough professional personnel to cater to its needs. We need women judges, doctors, nurses, professors, teachers, engineers' even pilots and drivers etc. to satisfy the needs of the society. Muslim women prefer female doctors for examining them. And if we don't allow women to purse education beyond fourth standard how can we have female doctors?

Islamic teachings allow women to go in for highest academic pursuits and contribute in every section of life. Those who desire to serve Islam in these tiring times need acclimation. But they should present a proper picture of Islam scripted in Holy Quran and Sunnah. If we tend to bring our own interpretations and then try to impose them, that would only amount to defame and create misunderstanding about Islam. Such steps hardly serve Islam. Infact they provide a cause for the people and even Muslims to run away from Islam.

Pakistani rulers, ulema, politicians and civil society groups need to engage these groups collectively through talks and stress upon them the need to eschew such policies that have become a source of misunderstanding about Islam and Muslims. There is an urgent need to avoid violence. A military might and killing people would not serve the purpose but would only complicate the situation.

Reports about the situation evolving in NWFP, Baluchistan, waziristan, WANA, Swat, Bajur Agency etc are very disturbing and frightening. Advantage of such a situation goes only to the powers inimical to Pakistan and Islam. I appeal to the well-wishers of Pakistan to try to address the situation through sagacity and reasonableness. That is the call of hour. Responding violence with violence never ends violence but only enhances it. Experience has shown us it only creates an unending circle. An urgent change in the strategy and policies is needed to end violence and grievances.
