Karzai says ties with Pakistan ‘better than ever’

* Afghan president appreciates King Abdullah’s efforts to ‘bring about better environment’ between Pakistan, Afghanistan

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Afghanistan’s relations with its neighbour Pakistan are “much better than ever”, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has told BBC in an interview.

On his visit this week to New York to attend a UN Inter-faith Dialogue, Karzai held talks with President Asif Zardari and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah. He appreciated the Saudi king’s effort. He described it as an effort “to bring about a better environment between Pakistan and Afghanistan”.

Whether he is doing a million times better ‘by his people’ as he was told he needed to by US president-elect Barack Obama, is for the Afghan people to decide and not for outsiders, he said.

When asked about the loud and growing demands for him to tackle ‘rampant corruption’, Karzai told BBC “It’s part of my responsibility and I am addressing it very, very forcefully.”

But he also pointed out the international community ‘had to do much better’ in tackling its own corruption.

Karzai admitted there are “issues the US administration will have with us and issues we will have with them”.

Karzai praised US President George W Bush as a “very strong backer of Afghanistan and a personal friend,” even though he went on to list a catalogue of mistakes made by the international community where the US has played the leading role when it comes to troops and money, if not direction.

Karzai pointed to a number of failures, including a reluctance to go after the Taliban and Al Qaeda in their sanctuaries and training grounds in Pakistan, the failure to build ‘Afghan capacity’, and the establishment of parallel institutions which impede the Afghan government’s own development.

Asked whether a troop ‘surge’ would work in Afghanistan, as it did in Iraq, Karzai emphasised it was not just a question of troops but the right strategy. “I wish our partners had listened to us more,” the president remarked.

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Sunday he would guarantee security for Taliban leader Mullah Omar if he ever wanted to negotiate and said Western allies should remove him or leave if they disagreed with that.

With the Taliban insurgency spreading seven years after the hardline Islamists were forced from power, the possibility of talks with more moderate Taliban leaders is increasingly being considered, both in Afghanistan and among its allies.

The Afghan government says it is willing to talk to anyone who recognises the constitution.

A tentative first step towards talks was taken in September when a group of pro-government Afghan officials and former Taliban officials met in Saudi Arabia for discussions on how to end the conflict.

But the Taliban have rejected any suggestion of talks as long as foreign troops remain.

Karzai told a news conference he would guarantee the safety of notorious Taliban leader Mullah Omar, if he ever wanted to talk peace.

"If I hear from him that he is willing to come to Afghanistan or to negotiate for peace ... I, as the president of Afghanistan, will go to any length providing protection," Karzai said.

"If I say I want protection for Mullah Omar, the international community has two choices: remove me or leave if they disagree," he said.

Good observation, this reminds me of how the UK Conservatives when in power would reduce the national tax right before Christmas and the election year, come vote time they would remind the people "Remember we gave you that big tax break, so who love's ya baby! ... Very Nitty Gritty politics, but politics at its best!

Chachoo Karzai is also trying somthin similar but i would not trust his word as far as i can throw my old DMS, and thats not very far! :D

No need to apologies... :)

Your spot on, their main central campus was near Aldgate in East London although to separate themselves from the riff-raff associated with the east they use to consider themselves as part of the City of London "Which is where all the business hubs were apparently.

I however went to their campus in the North of London, on Holloway Road and use to share my flat with Japanese and an Italian, still have the old Alumni card knocking around somewhere if i can find it that is! :)

I remember it when it was the London Guildhall campus. actually went there on a protest a few years ago. They had to close teh campus for the day, because they thought radicals were going to invade it. I still remember the cold wet morning.

lol...this was a long time before the WOT. '95, i think. some muslim girl in the campus had certain things made of durex, filled with alcohol thrown at her by members of the rugby team. News spread, and we all gathered for a good old protest after jumah. The whole thing was hijacked by Hizbu Tahrir, and the authorities got scared, shut down the campus due to fears of violence. And we protested there for a few hours, made some speeches, and felt really good about ourselves.

That was a time when muslims were very active in uni and college campuses. i dont know how it is today.

Or can it be buying hedge before starting SHOCK & OWE round 11 in Pakistan? Friends, please look at the timing of the mediation with Taliban? Isn't it happening when WOT pursuers are singing constant chorus about the upcoming attack from FATA? How about PAK MIL's successful cleansing-operation in Bajour that has thwarted/derailed conspirator's greater Pakhtunistan plan? And also look at how has elected VP commented on putting elected PRES at challenge right from the start? Is that time coinciding with 'Buying Mullah Omar scheme' or not? Finally all seems are coming to a logical conclusion from Mush's 180 degree turn as a phase/layered conspiracy of the annihilation of only rooted Muslims (Some Pakistanis IMHO in the world) when Pak has been internally-weakened successfully, isn't it?
