Karnal Sher Khan Nishan- e - Haider - Hero of Kargil

.
@WAJsal I don't know if I told you this but my family have long association with armed forces. Going back to before World War 1 in early part 1900s many members of my family joined the the then British Raj armies. Poverty and lack of jobs was stimulus to every able bodied man signing up. My dad was youngest of his siblings and all of his older brothers served in WW2 and his education was paid by the soldiers wages remitted by his elder sibling to my grandad.

That continued through 1960s although my dad failed the eye test and his trajectory took him to London thus leading to where I am. By 1990s our extended family's connection with military ceased as the last serving member (Colonel) retired. That is almost century of service in the armed forces.

Now of course other avenus have opened up although even now there are some far of relatives serving. Of course for obvious reasons my own branch of the family now is settled abroad so is out of that loop. But that weight of century of service still lingers on. That is why I have especial respect for the man on the ground - the soldier who faces the bullets coming from some unknown village from rural Pakistan. They are the backbone as sons of the soil that hold Pak togather. They have done it from 1947 to date.

Great thread..

@Atanz , good to know.

Nice, did he share some old stories with you?

Atanz, NLI played a key role in Kargil. I have some relatives who have gone through that tough period. NLI is the most decorated regiment of PA and is a pride of PA and the nation. I literally have number of relatives currently in the Army, one of them is in PAF, the rest in the army. I have been to Bunji too a couple of times(look it up on Google). I have a lot of relatives on my mother side, couple of uncles on my Father side, a number of cousins in the PA. Gilgitis usually have a wish to join the PA, not kidding. Everyone wants to be an Army officer. Fighter pilot is also quite popular.
You might not know, but another Nishan-e-haider recipient in the Kargil war-Lalik Jan is actually from Yasin in Gilgit Baltistan. And i have been to his Mizar a couple of times. I hope you read his story too. He has inspired many locals to join the PA and do something for the country.
Plus we have many relatives who are not among us anymore but took part in Gilgits liberation and the Kashmir war.
Here are some pictures for you:
