Russia develops NATO-standard assault rifle

The Russian manufacturer of the infamous AK-47 assault rifle has released short promo video of its new experimental AK-19 rifle.

The AK-19 is a version of the AK-12 assault rifle chambered for NATO’s 5.56mm rounds.

The new Russian assault rifle has received a lightweight telescopic-type buttstock with improved ergonomics, a new sight and slotted flash suppressor that allows quickly installing a silencer.


“The experimental AK-19 assault rifle. The cartridge used is the NATO 5.56. The barrel length – 415mm. The twist rate – 178mm. The weight – 3,350 g,” the Kalashnikov Group said on its Instagram.

The new assault rifle has received a lightweight telescopic-type buttstock with improved ergonomics, a new sight and slotted flash suppressor that allows quickly installing a silencer.

The new assault rifle will be demonstrated to the public in the Kalashnikov Group’s demonstration center at the Patriot Park during the Army-2020 international arms show that will run on August 23-29.

Kalashnikov Concern Introduces 5.56x45mm Version of AK-12 Called AK-19

Despite the ongoing pandemic, the largest Russian annual arms exhibition, ARMY, was not canceled and started as scheduled. During this exhibition, Kalashnikov Concern introduced several new small arms products including a new LMG, a smart shotgun and the AK-19, a 5.56×45 rifle based on the AK-12.

The new AK-19 rifle features some improvements that were incorporated into its design based on the feedback from the Russian military on the AK-12 rifle. One of these design improvements is the new adjustable and folding stock which is similar to the stock of recently released PPK-20 SMG. The company notes that this stock is lighter and has improved ergonomics compared to the original AR-pattern stocks of AK-12/AK-15 rifles. Another design change is the new aperture rear sight which apparently is more compact compared to the rear sight of AK-12. The AK-19 also has a new muzzle device with a QD suppressor attachment feature. Some of these design changes/improvements will also be used in an updated version of the AK-12 which we’ll talk about in a separate article.

The AK-19 rifle has a 415mm (16.3″) barrel which is the standard barrel length of full-size AKs. The twist rate is 1:7 which will stabilize a wide range of 5.56x45mm projectiles. The rifle also has new 5.56 windowed 30-round magazines similar to the magazines adopted with the AK-12. The overall weight of AK-19 is 3.35 kilograms (7.4 lbs).

Earlier, before the start of the exhibition, in an interview given to RIA Novosti news agency, Dmitry Tarasov, the CEO of Kalashnikov Concern, said that the AK-19 was developed to expand the export line of their products. This was also emphasized in the information published by Kalashnikov Media later, during the ARMY 2020.

Pretty interesting design tweaks. In most cases, changes based on the field use feedback are indeed improvements because oftentimes the shortcomings of any particular firearm’s design can be revealed only if you use it for a long enough period of time in the conditions it is designed to be used.

Kalashnikov AK-19 assault rifle is the most recent version of the Kalashnikov AK-12 assault rifle family, which was adopted by Russian army in 2018 and is now in full production. Kalashnikov AK-19 is an export-only version, chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition. It also features most recent upgrades to AK-12 family, which were implemented following initial fielding of the parent 5.45mm rifle by Russian army.

Kalashnikov AK-19 rifle is a gas operated, select-fire weapon which uses traditional Kalashnikov action. Its new features include free-floating forend with Picatinny rails, non-removable gas tube with maintenance plug at the front, detachable top cover with integrated Picatinny rail. AK-19 also features new, improved shoulder stock, made from polymer. Stock folds forward and to the left to save space, and can be adjusted for length of pull, with 6 positions. New ergonomic pistol grip is made from polymer with integrated trigger guard. Hollow base of the pistol grip contains a cleaning kit container.

Container release button is located at the base of the trigger guard. New rear sight is of aperture (diopter) type; range adjustments are made through a horizontal drum below the sight, which has settings between 100 and 800 meters. Windage adjustments for zeroing the rifle require a special screwdriver which is included into the cleaning and maintenance kit provided with each gun. Rifle is fitted with non-detachable flash hider / compensator, and a proprietary sound suppressor (silencer) can be easily installed over the standard muzzle device. Other accessories may include a knfie-bayonet and a 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher. Kalashnikov AK-19 rifle is compatible with 30-round box magazines originally produced for 5.56mm Kalashnikov AK-101 rifle.
